Power deivery is the difference, 2 strokes fucking shift (specially the 250s) but lack the low down grunt, once you're used to them they're ok. Lighter too.
That said I'd take a 450 over a 250 anyday, IMHO.
And KX250's are cool bikes. Check the linkage bearings (get it on a stand for that) and the head bearings, check fork seals for leakage and ask how many hours the piston has had

250 4 strokers race against 125 2 stroke, the 450s race 250 2strokers

The kx`s are good bikes but cr`s are better, Fook the 4strokes stick to the 2strokes ye u might need to change rings an so on ever now and again but 2strokes are so much more fun than the 4`s and its quick an easy anyway.
If you got a grand to spend your better of buying at least a 2003model.
If you do go for the 2stoke make sure you have a good ride make sure gear box, clutch is ok. ask how often they changed the oil an rings this should be done around about every 3 rides to keep the barrel all good, rings are cheap enough! also when i buy crossers i always take a look inside the barrel make sure its ok, they shouldnt mind u taking the top off if they do mind the chances are the barrels fooked..
Good luck

yer if its in fairly gd condition then youve done well if you can get it for Ł700 , i sold my 1989 kx 250 2 years ago for Ł750 it had a lot of money spent on it mind..
Im currently selling my cr 125 07 if your after a slightly newer bike lol
I have also got an 06 yzf 250 , which i use pretty much every w.end, they are great fun the old mx bikes you cant beat the buzz they give imo ....

it all depends what you want it for fella,if you want on open land wheeling everywhere 4stroke,tracks 2stroke but i would still try and find a RC valve CR,late 02 onwards.had an ex cas cr250 race bike and it was quick.sold that after breaking my ankle on it p*ssed out of my head lol NOT !.defected to 4 stroke, crf 450 59.5bhp it was ace and really quick but because there nowhere to go on em anymore except for proper practice tracks i went back to 2 stroke, less weight to pick up off the floor !! http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...x/100_0369.jpg http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...x/100_0482.jpg

Agreed, 4 stokes are much easier to ride. You need to be much fitter to race a 2 stroke imo.
Saying that, it depends what you want it for mate. I used to race KX;s and prefered them to the lot. Its hard to say why i prefer them but you can only judge it on lap times and how it 'feels'. If your not racing it, you wont really tell much difference between the whole 2 stroke/4 stroke range. you really have to get the most out of the bike to be able to tell/feel the difference. Different bikes suit different people and riding styles.
I can ride a 2 stroke quicker and much prefer them as its more demanding and more exciting imo. In fact i can actually ride a 125 2 stroke quicker than a 4 stroke 250 on most tracks. All depends on the track and how its suited to the bike.

I had a YZF 450(02) and it was fuckin manic man!!! unbelivable machines, but I can see why people think theyre heavy, but its the only bike I have ever driven so Im not able to judge the whole 2/4 stroke thing.

Although the 450's above look nice, im not into the whole 450 thing. Just not for me. Good for a blast on the field, or for a lazy thrash or a run on a practice day, but not to race on. If you know how to get the most out of them, a 250 2 stroke is quicker round a track imo. The only track a 450 could be quicker on is the few tracks with some pretty long straights, but not by much if any, and then the 250 could gain ground round the tighter corners imo.
