www.motul-oil.co.uk or Opie Oils

300v should be dropped at very regular intervals though (4,000?)

There is a problem with the 5w-50 grade that all oil companies make and that is they have to use so much VI Improver (this keeps the oil in grade) to bridge the gap between the 5w and the SEA50, with so much VI Improver the oil becomes week if you like and will drop out of grade quite quick, so it will soon be functioning as a 5w-40 or lower.

I would suggest a shear stable oil like the Silkolene Pro S, but look at the 10w-50 as this will give better protection to the engine when hot, assuming your car is modified and driven hard.

Why did you have to clean the post up? what did I miss?

Cheers

Guy.

Ive just read this and i have had the valvoline in my cossie for nearly a year now.I got 8 litres for 30 quid.I will be going back to silkolene after reading this.

hi oilman,

ford escort 1600cvh on dellorto twin 40s, kent cam kit, 38mm chokes.
engines done around 130,000

i have just taken that engine from my orion that has been laying pretty dormant for about 3months. now in the last 3days i have somehow ruined two hydraulic lifters after some heavy usage.

i topped her up with some 20w 50 when i did the engine swap without thinking about it (d'oh). it had 15w 40 in her already (i think).

could this have caused my problem?

please help! i am going to flush the engine as well, any advice on what/who to use as a flush and replacement oil??

thanks, sam.

Hi guys

Just a quick explanation for the delay in getting back to you first of all. Something was wrong with our account and we weren't able to post. We weren't ignoring you, but as you have been waiting, please use the code SORRY10 to get an extra 10% off on top of your normal 10%.

I'd go for a good 5w-40, something like the Silkolene Pro S, Gulf Competition, Motul 300V or Redline

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

It will give you good start up protection for those short trips as well as being stable enough to deal with enthusiastic driving

Hi,
I've just fixed my van so this really usefull,

Engine make; S2 RS Turbo

Mileage; Not sure. Apparantly had a rebuild around 6-7 thousand miles ago

Mods; JDM T4 turbo running 11-12 psi boost. Big cossie intercooler. Kent cvh35 cam.
Non standard chip. Minimal head work (i.e a little gas flowing). Not sure on the history of the bottom end or the Bhp.

I don't know what oil the van had before I owned it. When I bought I would top it up with 10W40. Since then the head gasket went. I've fixed it and have been using OMD 90 to flush all the crap out from the blown gasket. OMD90 is a semi synthetic 10W30 oil which has a gentle additive. I've changed it twice so far and done around 60 miles since fixing. I would like to know what you reccomend I put in it after this last change. She's quit a hot engine. Thank you.

Oops, forgot to mention. I don't use it for huge journeys and I don't stay at high top speeds for long. I will cruise at about 80-90mph usualy. However I do boost it quite often as it's addictive as I'm sure people will agree.

The quality of the oil means it should last a lot longer than that. Motul give a short change period as it means people buy more.

I'd go for the Gulf Competition 10w-40. Really good stuff, a lot better than a semi. If you want a semi, go for something like the Silkolene or Fuchs XTR with very regular (4k)changes if you are driving it hard. The Gulf is more like a 10K change, so it doesn't work out any more expensive

Go for a 5w-40 or a 10w-40

The quality you choose is up to you, but the Gulf Competition would probably be my choice or the Motul 6100 if you want a cheaper alternative.

Most US cars are now recommended to use a 5w-20 oil due to fuel economy legislation in America and the Lightning is the same. You can also use a 5w-30, but just this morning I had a guy call to say how much better the car is running on 5w-20 than the 5w-40 the garage used in it. 5w-30 is going to be somewhere in the middle of that. This is the only road use 5w-20 we stock http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1000-red...oil-5w-20.aspx and it isn't the cheapest, but it is absolute top quality oil. You do get a quart free with each US gallon if you buy it from us though.

I doubt the 20w-50 caused the problem, but it isn't the correct grade. Stick to a 10w-40 in that.

I wouldn't go for one of the engine flush products on the market. Most of the time they are too harsh and remove any deposits that have naturally and harmlessly built up in the engine. If you use a flush, you can end up loosening those deposits, then you end up with solid bits in your oil. Not good. The best thing to do is to find the cheapest mineral oil you can, then empty the old oil out, add the cheap oil and let it run for a little while. Drain that and the muck it collects out, then fill it back up with a decent 10w-40.

Oilman the heirarchical menu system on your website isn't working for me, the 3rd "level" menu is kind of cut off and I can't see or make any choices. This affects for instance the Car Oils menu, the second level menu with By Type, By Grade etc is visible, but the next level doesn't open properly. Thought you should know!

Try a different Web browser or empty your Temp. Internet Files. Works fine for me in Firefox 3.5.

Question for the Oilman Witchdoctor:

~110,000 mile Cosworth YB (recent top-end rebuild), currently Stage 1, soon to be Stage 3, daily use, occasional 'exhuberant' driving - I wanted either fully synthetic 10W/40 or 15W/50 for an oil+filter change it's having today, but the garage couldn't get any. The 'closest' they could get was fully synthetic 5W/40. All their suppliers could offer was semi 10W40 or something else which I've now forgotten, the suppliers saying they don't do fully synthetic oil as it ruins the turbo? Eh?

I'd already run it in (after the head rebuild) on 10W40 semi-synthetic, and decided it was time for an oil change. Their suppliers claimed that what they have on file for mine is semi - but I was under the impression that semi was only really used for running an engine in? Is that right? And, if I were to continue running on semi, would it do any damage?

10w-40 semi is the minimum spec oil to be used, in a standard car. In a modified YB I would not use anything other then a synthetic. In teh short term no harm done but it will not be upto the job of mcuh hard use.

You should be able to get your hands on Mobil 1 15w-50 locally, that would be ideal.

A good shear stable 5w-40 or 10w-40 synthetic would be my choice. Im thnking this one as a good choice http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60120-gu...oil-10w40.aspx if you want one of the best.

Fine for daily to hard/track use.

The best thing to do is to find the cheapest mineral oil you can, then empty the old oil out, add the cheap oil and let it run for a little while. Drain that and the muck it collects out, then fill it back up with a decent 10w-40.

thanks for the reply, i got a bottle of 10w 40 mobil super S semi-synth to put in her. any reviews of this? thanks again, sam

Basic semi, we sell it and it's popular. Not for modded or tracked cars though

would you not recommend that to put into my 1.6 cvh camed and carbed escort then? any reasons why you say that oil is not any good for track or modded cars?

Semi synthetics are just not designed for track use, they are road oils.

They are ok in a modded engine but will need regular changes as they will break down quicker then a synthetic, but then most modded cars are used pretty hard so again a better reason to use a synthetic.
