The Mobil 1 is very good stuff, a true pao synthetic. But thye 15w is not the best cold start protection, 10w would be better as it would circulate faster.

There is better in terms of quality to, the ester based synthetics have the edge on pao synthetics.

Also there is price, an oil like the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 is better abd cheaper then the Mobil 1.

Cheers

Guy.

5w-40 or 0w-40, we found best results with an ester based synthetic such as the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40.

As above mate 5w-40 synthetic, if you mod it or use on track look at 10w-50.

Mobil 1 15w-50 is a good quality synthetic, an not too thin so ideal.

Better though is the ester based Silkolene Pro S 10w-50, this has been very well proven.

Is that the XTR 5w-30?

If so it will be fine, though I would change it after track use as it is mineral based.

What would you advice for mine? 5W30 in it now

Make Ford
Model Granada Cosworth
Year 1992
Engine size and type 2938cc V6 24v
Type of use (track/road etc) fastroad (and maybe odd trackday)
Modifications that affect stock BHP. higher lift cams, modded plenum, aftermarket ECU, custom stainless exhaust, conefilter

Additional info: Engine is a low-mileage (sub 40k) engine. Want to "run it in" (it doesn't really need to run in as the crank, conrods and pistons haven't left the block) for more or less 30/40miles and change oil and filter.

I would stick with it but watch the quality if doing trackdays, there are 5w-30's and 5w-30's!

wondering if it is worth using a flush (any recommendations) will be putting in silkoline pro s 10w-50 as this seems to be the recommendation of here so far for :
saph 4x4 cossie , stage 1 at moment , 97k miles .

been putting 10w-40 semi synth in for a bit now , seems to use alot and smoke on overun , would a flush filter and silkoline pro s help this , before i shell out on new turbo and various other bits to try & cure .

also could i use the pro s on the missus's golf 1.8t to top up , just had oil change on vw recommended oil ( can't remmenber which one it was tho ?)

John,

Any idea on oil temps? I would look at a good synthetic 5w-30 or 5w-40 as an upgrade to the 10w-40 semi.

Have a look http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-647-engine-oils.aspx

What oil are you currently using? A good 15w-50 or 10w-50 is ideal.

You can use synthetic for best protection and perfomance, have a look at Silkolene, Motul and Mobil here http://www.opieoils.co.uk

No need for a flush, after a few oil changes the Pro S will have given it a good clean.

Fine to top up the mrs's car too.

what additives to use with your silkonene s 10w50? why castrol edge 10w60 is bad? i heard that using edge 10w60 with teflon liquymoly additive is the best? and the people told me, that you can be sure, that not oil caused problems... what can you say?

Been looking at Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 and Mobil SYNT S 5w-40 for my Fiesta RS Turbo. It's near standard just chipped & T3 turbo @ 1bar which am I best with? there a big enough gap in quality to justify another Ł10-15quid?

Thanks

High oilman! I have a sierra sapphire cosworth 4x4 and has got the following mods:
2,4L farndon stroker kit ( crankshaft - con rods - flywheel) forged pistons, stock cams and valves, stock turbine with hybrid compressor and housing, breather system etc and running on 1,4 bar (about 400bhp - max revs are 7200). I use Motul 300V 15W- 50 competition which I replace every 6000Km together with filter. I 'm doing good?
For info I have once tested the ford specified 5W-30 Motorcraft but the car was making a lot of tapper noise and the oil pressure on idle when warm was almost zero! With Motul no problem at all! Plus I use the car for everyday use so from the 6000km between oil changes only about 400 - 500 are hard road use...
Thanks!!!

Sorry to pull this up, I have been told to use 10/ 60 in my cossie , had been told to use 5/30 off someone else, which of the 2 would be better to use. The engine is stage 3. Also whats the difference between a semi synthetic oil and a fully synthetic oil ? and whats best for a cossie semi or full ?

Cheers

sorry for the late reply.

I'd go for the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50. It will happily take the stress of a stage 3 engine.

Hi Oilman

Got some Questions regarding oil:

I have a standard 2wd Cossie. I have done some historic rally marshaling in the past and have noticed that some of the old Lotus, BDA and Pinto engined cars use Castrol r based lubricant (the sweet smell of castor). Looking around the net gives very sketchy information, but it is advertised as racing oil and very reasonably priced too (married, 3 kids etc on a budget).

Is this stuff any good for YB usage and if so how long between oil changes would be needed.

It also states that r40 can be used a 4 stroke engine oil or 2 stroke pre mix. I run cast iron air cooled mildly tuned Lambretta would this be any good for use in that as I'm sure that's what would have been used back in the day.

I fully understand that the Cossie system would require a complete flush before putting castor based oil in an engine previously run on more conventional oils.

Thanks in advance for your help!
