Default mk5 Golf Gti Vs Tdi overall economy?

I have a mk4 gt tdi which the misses uses every day, and want newer car. so obvious choice is a mk5 gt tdi.

but they are ugly as hell, so id want to put a gti bumper and trim on it as well as seats and wheels and suspension.

Lets face it its gna cost at least £1k to put the wheels, bumpers, seats and lower the tdi.

someone said to me over a year a diesel only works out £50 cheaper than a modern 2.0l petrol, taking into consideration all the variables!

does anybody have the missing sums, this may sway me! realistic driving fiqures please not manurefacture fiqures as we all know they lie!!

Mpg of GTi = 25-30
Mpg of tdi 1.9 and 2.0 = 45-50
Price of petrol =£1.15
Price of diesel =£ 1.30

Price of an 06 GTi 5 door =10k??????
Price of an 06 Tdi 5 door =8k???????

obviously i wont pay the full price as i can get them trade price

I will be buying a car in the next few weeks, so please be honest/realistic

I dont really want to spend any more than 7-8k. ive had expensive cars before and it depresses me to much!

Id also like to point out i dont want a debate as to which it better/faster and all that, as i WONT be buying the car for speed. its more about styling and comfort and having a nice looking everyday car for the misses.

thanks in advance

RIGHT

well ill round it to
tdi = 50 mpg (x2=100 miles)
gti=35 mpg (x2.86 =100 miles)
petrol = 1.17
diesel= 1.30
anyone please correct me if im wrong on following

4.54 litres per gallon

petrol = £5.32 per gallon
diesel = £5.90 per gallon

Gti = 100 miles will cost £15.21
Tdi = 100 miles will cost £11.80

so for 12kmiles a year

140 gt tdi
12000 miles / 51.4mpg / 4.54 litre's per gallon X £130.5 = £6,710

170 gt tdi
12000 miles / 47.9mpg / 4.54 litre's per gallon X £130.5 = £7,201

2.0 GTI
12000 miles / 35.3mpg / 4.54 litre's per gallon X £117.2 = £8,775

So even if i spent 2k changing a tdi to my spec. the year after i'll still potentialy save 2k per year over running a gti!?

Dont forget the residual values of both cars need to be factored into the equation.

At the moment, RV's are all over the shop cos of the way fuel prices, road tax and the general economy, and it all boils down to how long your gonna keep it for?

Have you checked the emissions too? As 06 plate cars are subject to the awful tax banding.

ok I had a look Lee, you may want to factor any insurance difference as well as the tax, which is as follows;

1.9s tdi 135g £66 for 6 months & £120 per year
2.0 gt tdi 149g same as above
2.0gti petrol 192g £115.50 for 6 months & £210 per year

All set to rise next year!

not really to fussed about tax. i pay nearly £200 /12mths each for the 3 cars anyway at the mo. so now with 2 cars it will be less.

also its a one off cost, which i dont worry too much about.

its the fuel cost which im concerned with as its a weekly cost!

insurance, im not even looking at the prices, as u know i get raped/pay £3200 a year at the mo, so now with 2 cars it will be much less.

thats the plan!

i just dont see why VW dont sell the so called GT tdi with the Gti trim. surley they would sell loads of the bloody things, cos the tdi's at the mo are vile to look at from the front!!

depending on the cost, it might be cheaper to get a 140 bhp engine and have it remapped up to 170

Your 100% correct but it depends on if you want the additional spec of the 170.

to be honnest mate the only bit on the r32 i like is the rear bumper! the rest sucks in commparison to the mk4 r32. dont even like the wheels!

i probably will do. as i'll be putting in leather gti seats anyway. so no point paying the 170 premium if its all coming out anyway!

anyway all the 170 is, is a chipped 140!

ive also heard a chipped 140 to 180bhp gives better economy than the standard 170

not really. the 170 bhp model can be remapped to give 30 bhp extra, as can the 140. if what you're saying was true, you could just remap the 140 to give +60 bhp
