Default age discrimination laws ... good or bad for you or company?

Just had our first experience at work of the new age discrimination laws kicking in. We've had an ongoing job evaluation at work for a few years, and it's finally kicking in.

Good news first... I'm getting a £5K a year payrise in January. GET IN!!!!

Trouble is, my it applies to everyone, so the other guy in my dept who's been there 16 years or so, end up with a rise, but much smaller than mine, so we are on the same pay scale. Now that hardly seems fair, seeing as I've only been there 6 months, and still have a lot to learn, but he knows the place inside out, and there isn't much he doesn't know.

Now, I'm very much of the "old school" work ethic, of starting at the bottom, and working your way up, earning your pay rises through sheer bloody hard work and persperation. And I appreciate, that companies pay senior members of staff more, because they have the experience and knowledge that are valuable to the company.

But then if you stay in the same position for a lot of years, anyone that comes in new to the job is going to be earning the same as you, despite knowing nothing.

So is it that persons fault for not going for a more senior position?

Be intersested especially to hear if this affects any of the self employed or small business owners on here.

It has been said in the law that you can reqard extra for length of service.
Most of my staff are simlar paid with the biggest difference around £1500 per year, i will increase the long term people in Jan but hold back the newer staff.
However there base wage ould be the same whether 16 or 60.

On another note i prefere older workers, more reliable, dont go of sick and on time, i hate anyone under 30 and im only 30 myself

people should be paid according to how well they do there job , the better you are the more your paid,

Reason , this makes people try hard and aim high ,
If your paid the same no matter how hard you try and the bloke you work with is an idle twat and paid the same as you , you arnt going to work your balls of are you ??? but if its possible to be better thought of and paid accordingly then you will try harder .

Nobody should dictate what a company owner should pay people , its should be the boss who says who gets what
