Default MK3 Golf GTI 16V v's MK6 Escort RS 2000 v's 306 GTI 6

Which one of the above is best for track action, not thinking of stripping it out just some mild engine and suspension mods. RS 2000 and Golf are both 150bhp but Peugeot is 169bhp. Car also gets used for road use but not everyday as I have a company vehicle. Have found good examples of all the above cars so it's just a matter of choosing which one and they are all priced roughly the same. Current car for track use is a MK2 Golf GTI 8V so am looking for a reasonable step up in performance. Any comments appreciated.

MK3 Golf is a bit of lardy so and so. Pug has a superb chassis. RS2k is fun as well.

Why not just find and fit a 16v engine to your current Mk2 Golf?

Good idea matey but basically want something abit more modern with air conditioning. Love the Golfs handling but the engine lets it down on the track although on the road you don't really notice how quickly it runs out of puff. Need something with some more power and top end, trying to tune the original 8V is a waste of time.

Anyone ever driven a RS 2000 in anger? Anyone ever been on track in one? What did it go like?

I'd go for the GTi6 myself, never been out in a RS2000 but as far as i can see they seem to hold they're money too well for what is essentially a old escort with somewhat limited tuning potential.

I'd have to get rid of the Golf option, sorry :/ Mk3's are just too clumsy. If it was up to me, I'd have the GTi-6, fastest, probably just as easy and cheap to get tuning bits for as the Escort, and excellent handling.

the 2k engine was tuned to 280bhp in rally trim! And handles very well. Pug is quicker out the box though.

I know they are awesome on the road. But on a track if u are uprating the suspension, due to it's torsion bar, im not sure it will be that much ahead - if at all?

i.e. where it scores, is in it's handling/ride balance. Obv on a track, ride isn't a problem, so things become a lot different?

Pug for me too. It has an extra ratio for better acceleration and make 17bhp more than the 2k out of the box. And it looks better than both the others too

Unless you want to buy the one I've got in particular i personally think the RS2k isn't that great It handles well, has a nice spec etc. but just feels like any other, non RS badged escort I'm sure a 280bhp one is good though

The GTi-6 feels quicker [is quicker] and handles well standard

As said before, mk3 golfs are pretty barge-like in comparison to either the escort or the pug

If I was getting a cheap[ish] NA, FWD track car, I would DEFINITELY try and find a 1.6 vti Civic either an older CRX or a 3 door

GTI-6 for me mucka.

Handling is good to a point as standard but a bit shakey on the limit, so aftermarket stuff and a lower ride and 17's and it would piss all over the other options and good value at 2k and below. Quick too.

I've had one as a daily drive for the last 6 months and there good fun, realy buzzy engine.

My girlfriend is looking at one, what are they like as an everyday car? (GTI-6 that is) Whats the fuel consumption like, are they easy to drive? Friend has a S16, and he says the clutch is very heavy, but he doesnt know if thats just because its fucked

Depends what your used to I spose. Not the nicest drive due to the gearing, your constantly changing gear round town etc... I go 1st 3rd 6th when tootling about! There a realy revy motor and the power comes in between 4k and 7k so you have to boot it to grt the best out of it. Ł30 get me 200ish miles so not that bad. The worst thing is the turning circle due to the gearbox extending into the wheel arch limiting lock. Mini roundabouts become three point turns!! Fast, reliable and handle good too. Very good value for money IMO.

The handling of a golf MK2 is much better than the MK3. I dont know if you know this, but the MK3(2.0 16V) has reserves in BHP. VW tuned the engine is tuned down to make it more atractive for a greater market. Otherwise the BHP came to close in the BHP range of the VR6. If you find yourself a good one. Just chip it and a good exhaust and it puts out around the 170 BHP. I'd have had such an engine in my MK2 golf whit a G60 gearbox. flowed head other cams and it pulled out an 186 BHP on the rolling road.

my mk5 rs2000 get driven every day (even though its completely stripped out )and ive done several track days and its good enough to show up alot so called better faster cars, with the suspension and brakes set up properly for track use and driven right you will be happy with it.

you can pick them up cheap and they are cheap to run ect so they have to be worth a look

the gti6 is a far superior car in every aspect apart from build quality

was the best handling front wheel drive car around when it was released, it stole the clio williams crown!

I have an Mk6 RS2K as my everyday car and to be honest i cant fault it!

Handles really well with the set up i have, in fact it handles much better than my cossie and RS Turbo!

Bet that upset a few people!

Just a bit slow thats the only problem but handles well, brakes well and is reliable and fairly economical!
