Two totally different cars mate, I presume u mean an E46, well Im sorry but an Evo aint gonna touch an M3 on style and luxury, but as said if twisties is your thing then youd be daft to do it in an M3

nope utter crap mate sorry, mine had a service after 4500miles and it cost £159, it is not the best on petrol but i think 18mpg is a bit steep on a decent run it really is not that bad relativley speaking obviously, You can have them serviced any were as long as the place uses the Mitsu recomended parts (it might have to be approved) but mine was done at the Main dealer,
In standard form it made over 320 think it was 339bhp some thing like 249 @ fly at PE r/r day so plenty of power in standard from, if you have not drivern one then i would suggest you test drive one, as soon as i did i was making plans to buy one, fortunately my misses has a company car so we do not use it every day (i work abroad) so when i drive it it doesnt bother me filling her up.
If you are planning on using it as a daily driver then um, maybe M3 purely on servicing schedule and MPG but i brought it knowing they were not the cheapest but having wanted one for a long time was prepared to accept these facts,
Hope that helps,
Mike

The Evo but only because I have a severe disliking for BMW's
To be fair they are two completely different cars so you really need to work out what you want from the car and drive both before you can make the choice that's right for you.

I know mate was well chuffed, apprently that is not uncommon on them either Now it is Downpipe time and De-cat then maybe some brakes,
Oh Dicky the brakes arent up to much either the judder like a hore with parkinsons mate most people change um to AP's circa £600 but apprently well worth it, having been in Gary's from APT with the 6 pot AP's i can see why you would change if money was not an issue

i have a e46 m3 absolutely love it, handles exceptionally well even in the wet, not the quickest of cars have to wind it up a bit, driver feedback is spot on if you like rear wheel drive cars you'll love this one,
evo 8 is as they say the "b" road flying machine safe and sure alot easier to drive quickly
you want more fun m3, fuel consumption is slightly better in the m3 at 21mpg, piece of mind in m3 (no turbo issues)
whatever you decide enjoy

You said Style, now thats a matter of opinion, you can have the leather in a 340 now granted they are not deemed as plush cars as there European counter parts but again thats opinion, as for luxury what are you meaning, A/C Sat Nav leather ??? help me out with this one, i can see what your getting at but no one has ever managed to tell me what they mean,

Servicing costs on the M3 are low - fuel economy can be great if you potter around (70mph on the motorway in 6th you'll see 30+). Tyres will be expensive from a dealer but who uses dealers for tyres?! It doesn't eat tyres anyway...
If you look at a pre-june 2003 car make sure it's had the bottom-end engine recall, as all cars up to that date needed it to correct a problem. I would imagine most have, but it's worth checking with either the dealer, or BMW UK if buying from an independant. Recall-fixed cars (or post-May 2003 cars) are fine, nothing to worry about.

Your right EVO's are expensive to run but a very rewarding car to drive.
Service wise I paid £200 for my 1st service which I thought was reasonable.
Fuel wise you can squeeze 25-28mpg if your sensible(I averaged this during the running in period). Only issue being you jump in the car and sense and sensibilty go out the window almost as fast as your last fuel stop
The reason I bought an EVO over an E46 M3 was partialy down lack of mechanical sympathy on my part, I just wasnt convinced that an M3 would sustain as much abuse as an EVO would(merely my opinion).
If you were to drive both cars and allow the sensation of the drive rather than the practicaity of your purchase to influence your descision, then I sugest you would be driving home in an EVO.
I have to admit I do often think I should have bought the M3 until Im back behind the wheel of the EVO
Good luck in whatever you decide to buy they are both top cars

Also, if it's important, the EVO will be a lot more "tuneable" (being a turbo car).
Forget anything you read about the E46 M3 being tuneable - chips and remaps are just a complete load of nonsense on it. Without serious engine work you'll achieve nothing.
Just something to bear in mind......
