how do you keep yours tidy? i've seen spanner rails on ebay, and ive got a few sets of socket rails but they are pretty shit really, i was thinking about cutting a piece of plywood to screw the socket rails down to. anyone found any better products or ideas?

dont really want to drill into my new box though, i think i'll try some plywood
spanners are my main problem though, especially if the box is in the back of the van.

for the spanners in my tool box. First set are in one of the smaller draws for random spanners, second type is in one of the bigger draws for my ratchet spanners. It's actually a Halfords spanner rack, and it actually locks the spanners in it as opposed to them just sitting in it. So you have to twist them slightly to come out. Excellent as they don't all fly around when you're throwing the van over speedbumps

As for sockets, I just use the normal style socket rails I bought from Machine Mart YEARS ago;



Cut the rail down to desired length, slide on as many socket holders as you need and done. I have a socket rail for 3/8" drives, another for 1/4" drives, another for Torx sockets and another for reverse Torx. Not bothered to bolt em down or rivit them; just leave them in the drawer. If you have rubber matting and/or anti slide draw liners, they don't go anywhere. Also means it's easy to grab the entire rail if you need more than one socket on a job.....

Depends on what type of screwdrivers you use. I mainly use a Snap On ratchet screwdriver so it has interchangeable bits. I also have a Facom screwdriver which is just handle with interchangeable "blades", and these I just have in a slotted block of foam. I do have a few "regular" screwdrivers, and these just sit in one of the smaller draws, or in the lift out tote tray in the top...

My box is this one;



And top left to right to bottom is;

Row 1 left to right : Pliers and cutters / misc spanners / mole grips, assorted wrenches
Row 2 left to right : Screwdrivers / hammers and punches / rivit gun and rivits
Row 3 : Ratchet spanners, sockets and ratchets + assorted ratchet accessories
Row 4 : Cutting tools (blades, knives, etc)
Bottom deep drawer : everything else, but mainly stuff I don't use all of the time

Top Tote tray : most used tools : screwdriver + bits, 10, 12 + 13mm spanners, couple of knives, pick and hook tools, pigs foots, trim and pry tools, stubby screwdrivers, fixed flat and philips screwdrivers, and other varying bits n bobs I use on a daily basis

I'll try to remember to get some pics sometime. I'm not working at the moment so it's tucked in the shed under a load of other shit!

Little re-jig of the layout, and a week on the van and it's not nearly as organized as normal Need a new pair of spanner rails as I pulled out the originals to swap stuff around and now can't find them - think I binned them by mistake

I didnt want to drill my snap on cabs either, I got a sheet of 3mm allyminiyum and drilled and riveted the socket rails to it. It lifts out of the top of the box then, not that I ever do unless cleaning the box lol.

Use the plastic snap on spanner rails like at top of thread, with double sided tape holding 'em in drawer bottoms.

Screwdrivers socket extensions, plier sets etc I keep 'em in the drawers in the moulded snap on trays that they come with.

Don't transport rollcab or top box though it's too bloody big for that. It was a nightmare when I moved from Kent to Scotland, but as I had bought a lorry to move all our stuff I fitted a tail lift to it, twas easier than stripping the box drawer by drawer. I was shitting myself when it was going up on the tail lift tho !!

Don't suppose yr near me are you, coz I've got a huge roll of black uncut drawer liner.

Me too. My eyeight isn't as good as it used to be so I like being able to see at a glance what size the sockets are on each peg. I've got 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch versions and it's just a pity they don't match the drawer sizes better.

I got them from our local engineering supplies place - they had to order them in but they were about half the price they were on ebay.

I use those sharks teeth for holding all my spanners & for the sockets I use plastic trays with numbered posts.

Just need to sort some storage out for the various other sockets that won't fit on the posts.
