Default XR3i Help With Engine Components

Hi everyone,

i'm planning on putting gsxr1000 bike carbs on my mk4 escort xr3i mfi and i need to know what certain parts of my engine are.

I know the big silver bit at the back is my inlet manifold and the black hose is my air intake but i dont know what the silver box on top of the air box is and where all the red tubes go to... also i dont know what the 2 black hoses are for on my manifold and also what is the little box thing between the manifold and the rocker cover?

HELP PLEASE!!

thanks in advance

If you dont know all that i hope your getting someone else to do the conversion for you.

The silver box is part of the metering unit and the tubes are your fuelto the injectors

you will need to do away with everything from the inlet backwards to the tank

are you using carbs or injection throttle bodies?

for what little extra BHP you MAY gain doin all this my advice is just stick a decent cam, vernier wheel and a panel filter in it

you would have to do headwork etc on top of the carbs to see any noticeable gain

The cam would go in on top of the carbs and im not asking for advice on how to do it as i get the basic principle. I was mereley wondering which parts i'd need to re-connect back up and which parts were going.

I understand i'd need a custom manifold possibly from boggs bros and i'd need to get a fuel rail onto the carbs themselves. Someone else told me the silver block ontop of the air filter was something to do with the ABS/ is that right or wrong?

metering unit supplies (meters) fuel to the inlet (injectors). with carbs i beleive this is redundant. ive no experience whatsoever with bike carbs on cars, though theres plenty on here thats done it. do a search, im sure theres a guide and some r/d on such modification. im guessing its fuel pump, accelerator pump, fuel filter and a fuel pressure regulator. its a bit of a specialist game and doing its probably easy, doing it rights another thing though

just seen what jason put. for carbs everything from the inlet back to the fuel tank is redundant.

So does that mean I wouldn't need the metering unit anymore and was i told right that it also has something to do with my brakes as well?

This has disaster written all over it. Grab a Haynes manual and get studying. You might be better taking all the parts out of the engine bay then putting back what you need as and when you find out you need it.

Don't bother starting till you understand fully what you've got to work with.
