Default 1984 xr3i engine into 1989 xr3i

Hi there I've picked up a low milage 1984 xr3i engine, box and rest of runing gear, I've got a 1989 xr3i and just making sure it will all fit in no problem, was there any diffrences between the 84 and 89 3i engines?? And if I picked up a big valve head and it was off a later model 3i eg 1988 would that head go straight on?? Any help would be much apriciated as I kno more about the series 2 rs turbos than the XRs cheers Ryan

Hi!

As long as you dont have the EFi engine in your 89 XR3i the engine will swap over ok

as for your heads they will possibly be different

most XR3i's used the Hemi head all the way through but some MAY have the Lean burn head

put a pic up of your stage 2 head and i'll tell you if it will fit

if you need any more help just ask

Hi thanks for getting back to me, I got the engine and fitted a stage 3 big valve head that I had off a rs turbo engine, it was the one with the cross hatch pattern on so I had heard these were decent heads, I just changed the cam over from piper T2 to a Kent cvh 22, I've got it all up and running now with a 4branch, piper cross filter and so on and she seems to be running really sweet with loads of torque, the only problem is every few weeks I will drive it sumwere turn it off cum back after say a hour and it just won't start and takes loads of turning but the will run sweet as a nut in the morning, I'm guesing this may be a faulty warm up reg??cheeRS Ryan

as jason said as long as they are both MFi engines then it will fit, but the gearbox off the 84 car (mk3) wont fit the 89 car (mk4)

Hi cheers for the reply, I ended up using a old s2 rs gearbox on the 84 3i engine and my stage 3 head from the rs also, I'm missing the turbo now tho so may have to sell the 3i and buy another rs. Cheers Ryan
