Sapphire cossie rear lights
Just wondering if anyone knows if an 89 flint grey 2wd would of originally come with amber rear lights, mines got the later smoked rear lamps but I personally prefer the ambers, I've put amber front indicators and side Repeaters on it and I love the look of them,
Any help or opinions will be greatly appreciated,

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
2wd's all had ambers as standard, and 4x4's had the smoked lights
But most 2wd's all had the smoked lights retro fitted to update the look when the 4x4's came out
But now they're mostly all going back to the ambers, even a lot of 4x4's are converting to ambers

Thanks guys, I'm assuming that the black number plate surrounding should go as well then,
I best be looking for a good second hand pair now, I much prefer the ambers but didn't want to change them if they wasn't right for the car, I'm happy about that,
Thanks again

Can't believe people fitted the smoked lights for all those years they look horrid, especially with the black number plate panel it makes the back lights look single peice like a NY taxi, plus the headlights are massive as it is without making them looking even bigger with clear indicators.
Ambers are much better.

Ny taxi, lol, they do though,
I suppose if people are changing them back to ambers the price of them are gonna sky rocket, the days of Ł20 a pair are long gone.

I think I'm gonna get some ambers as I prefer them, I'll have to make a decision whether to keep the number plate surround and see how it looks when they're fitted,
Thanks for all your opinions, much appreciated.

The '1990 facelift' included all the 4x4 changes. There is no overlap with smoked lights being used on 2WD cars etc.

I remember when I first got my saff about 14 years ago and everyone said when you putting a 4x4 bonnet on and lights. I said back then I'm not I like it better like this so glade I didn't now. Mines an 89 G

That's my belief as well.
My 1990 2wd had ambers from factory, but when I bought it had smoked.
You have to remember late 2wd's probably had their light changed AS SOON as the 4x4 was out (could have been within weeks!!!), to make them look like the latest release of the car.

The changes includes the instrument cluster, different speakers (mine are square, prior to this they were round) and two of them were removed, as well as other things, mine has the number plate surround and the lights are marked security marked, so I believe it to be original.

Yep, I bet even dealers could have been guilty of it too. Quite likely they would do such as easy update to shift old stock.
The 'hooded dash' was a later update again.

Think the hooded dash came in late 91.
I'd be digging deep if a 2wd had a hooded dash, smooth fuel cap and number plate panel bolted on and the holes where slotted like factory rather than just round like someone's drilled them themselves.

Not the hooded dash, but the revisions I stated.
We have a 89 model that has been in the family from new and that has the differences I mention.
With this in mind, it's obvious there was a change, which incidentally I questioned on here and others replied saying that a small number were 'smoked' from the factory.

Why has this thread become a such a big deal on whether your 2wd Saff has the "correct front and rear indicator lenses fitted" ? Is it so important? Some people prefer front and rear ambers others do not, end of. As I said there is no right or wrong, have what ever you are happy with.

Well I've got some ambers on the way for the rear as personally I think they will stand out better against the grey, and they're the correct ones for the year. Lol.
I'm taking the car to get set up on the rollers on Wednesday as I've done a few upgrades to it so looking forward to that,
I'll keep you all updated if anyone's interested,
Thanks for all the info and opinions

Just to pick up, I have an 89 G plate that was used in Ford PR. It came with smoked lights and in the paperwork was the info for fitting them. I've put new ambers back in and used number plate plastic bolts to temporarily blank the holes for the number plate mount.
I put it through its first MOT and have all the paperwork, I guess the smoked fit was from Ford or the dealership.
