Default Welcome J932 BVW help wanted.

Hi guys.

Just bagged myself a 4x4 from a barn near Ipswich. It had been sat up for some time and does need work to see it through an MOT but its probably the only way I will ever afford to buy a Cosworth so I am a happy boy

I wanted to say hello to you guys as I will be hoping to get the car out to shows once she's done and meeting others in the RS world, and because I was wondering if anyone had ever come into contact with this car before. the reg is J932 BVW and its a Smokestone 4x4. Only has 2 previous owners from new, and (apparently) the first was the MD of ford UK who was given the car as a present when he left ford.

It is probably a long shot as the car has led a pretty sheltered life but I thought this or the RSOC was the best place to ask as I would love to learn how this car has got on in life before it came to me. Thankyou for any help and I look forward to meeting some of you in the not too distant future.

Fabian.

Haha thankyou mate. Ive wanted a Cossie since I was a boy and its amazing to finally have one. The bodywork is a bit tatty but theres no dangerous rot, and the engine is sweet as a nut and was running approx. 340bhp before it came off the road. I want a good fun sierra rather than a show stopper so im going to get it mechanically sound so that I can use it and then worry about the bodywork later.

The bodywork looks mint in your photo, what is wrong with it, rust I presume ?

Well photo's can do a lot of justice the guy i got it off saved it from being broken years ago. However the bonnet, front bumper and bootlid had already gone so the car currently has flint grey items in their place. As for rot there isnt actually that much, a little bit on the drivers door shut, and a slight scab on the rear r/h arch, but nothing to cry about.

However.......... I was getting it ready for its 'pre mot' last night, and had it running for about 15 minutes checking for leaks when the bottom end started making noises, not nice noises, like either diesel piston slap, or big end bearings. There is also another sound only when you blip the throttle as it slows back down to idle theres a horrible screeching noise coming from the top right of the engine as you look at it.

Think i need a bebuild!

Sorry to hear that the engine may need a rebuild, as what you are describing does sound like bottom end problems. As to the screeching sound that is more of a mystery, maybe camshaft bearing ?

Looks like a nice car mate, don't see as many round this neck of the woods! Like it on those wheels too, hope it don't need too much time, or more importantly money spent on it!!

The cost these days to get your engine rebuilt and running 400 bhp will not be cheap. Are you thinking of doing it yourself or getting a Ford Specialist to do it?
The unknown factor until your engine is stripped is what exactly is wrong with it
On top of possibly new big ends, mains, crank re-grind, re-bore and new pistons you will need a bigger turbo, uprated cams, uprated injectors,3 bar map sensor and new performance chip for the ecu and a live mapping session. This is the minimum but there are lots of other things that can be done as well depending how deep your pockets are....... uprated clutch, porting and polishing the head, wasted spark ignition, new engine wiring loom, 044 fuel pump to name a few.
Tough call for you, it depends on what you want, how much you can spend on it and how long you intend to keep it.
All I can say is you will certainly get a big grin factor every time you drive it if you go for the upgrades!!
Best of luck , keep us informed of progress.

Thankyou mate Well the car is already circa 340bhp. It has an AP organic clutch, dark greens, 3 bar map sensor, 044 fuel pump, stage 3 chip. But i should think at 340 these mods are at their limits? As for the rebuild i am buying a shed today and a work bench and all of the work i will be carrying out myself. The big end bearings have definately gone, as have the camshaft bearings, so these will be replaced, but im not sure if i want the cylinders rebored. Is it advisable to do this while the engine is stripped? Also grinding the crank? I pretty much want to take the engine apart, uprate whats knackered, replace all the essentials and put it back to together. Im a bit old hat when it comes to ignition but i have been reading up on wasted spark ignition and it does sound bloody good! Are there any disadvantages to it?

Sounds like the car has already got some of the bits you need for more power. What turbo is it ? If the bores have no signs of lips or marks and they measure within the tolerance there will be no need for a rebore. With regards the crank, if as you say the big ends are knackered it will be unlikely the crank has not suffered any wear, but again it needs to be properly checked. Most people would probably do everything to make sure of no future problems and remember if you are going for more power the engine needs to be 100%.
I have had no problems with the wasted spark ignition system myself and cant see there are any disadvantages to it.

Thankyou for your help. I do believe the turbo is a standard T3. I think my to do list so far includes: New big end bearings, regrind the crank, GP A head gasket, all new gaskets all round, uprated cams, new cam bearings, water pump, cambelt. Any else you can think of? Im trying to buy all the parts so that when i start stripping it down i dont have to stop untill its done!

Uprated oil pump, different turbo like a t38 with billet compressor wheel, RS 500 style intercooler.
