Default 4x4 and 2wd engine mount differences

Does anybody know how 2wd and 4x4 mounts differ? My rwd escos has a saff front end and beam but it's running modified 4x4 mounts. It looks like the gearbox bell housing is touching the anti-roll bar and I think the mounts are causing the engine to sit too low. Either that or it's the gearbox cradle which someone has fabricated. I have a proper 2wd escos cradle but haven't had chance to fit it yet but didn't know wether to order some 2wd mounts before the weekend

Normally it would not be possible to fit 4x4 engine mounts to a 2wd subframe. But early mk1 Sierras had a different subframe than the later ones and used the same engine mounts as the 4x4.

But if your question is on whether the sapph 2wd engine mounts are higher than the 4x4, then yes, I think they are indeed higher.

I'll try get a pic of them later. They definately look like 4x4 mounts but with the tops modified. I never noticed them but as soon as my cousin looked at the car he said straight away "you've got 4x4 mounts on a 2wd bed"

Who ever done the 2wd conversion was a proper bodger! Since having it on the ramp I noticed the prop isn't straight. The rear of the gearbox is kicking over to the driver side, if you look from underside up to the gearbox lever hole in the floor it's about and 20-25mm to the driver side someone has made a gearbox cradle out of 2 and got their measurements wrong I would say!

The mounts are totally different
What is the cross member made of? If it's alloy then it'll have 4wd stuff if it's steel then it should be 2wd
One is bolted into place from above while the other is screwed in from underneath

It's got a black steel crossmember Dojj. They may not be 4x4 then but I know 100% they aren't 2wd ones

The mounts look to be 4x4 turned upside down and have plates welded to the bottom (now the top) with a stud

I think these are not as tall as the 2wd mounts and therefore causing the engine to sit low and on the piss

There's being tight then there's being a twat! This person was obviously the latter. I'm sure the gearbox is actually touching the anti roll bar! My mate has a 24v cossie engine down his garage and the mounts look identical to 2wd so I'll try them on tomorrow and hopefully it'll lift the engine up of the anti roll bar

I'll probably buy the 2wd vibratech mounts Glenn. I got some standard mounts to try when I get home from work today

For gods sake don't use any other mounts than standard, engine and gearbox.
No need to change them at any power, you'll feel every vibration they are terrible.

What mounts did you replace them with Glenn? They are well knackered! I'm definatly going for updated engine mounts next time!

Hope you get it sorted Bill, looks like a bit of a bodge job? Can't see why they didn't just use a 2wd crossmember in the first place?!

I replacedy engine mountd with vibra tech mounts and left the gear box mount standard. I felt as if the car was more responsive with the vibras but since the other mounts were fooked im not suprised.

It has a 2wd cross member but some idiot butchered 4x4 mounts onto it! The mounts on my mates spare engine were fucked so I'll have to order some. In the mean time I've fitted some spacers under the mount arm between it and the actual mount, my gearbox is now not sitting on the anti roll bar anymore and it doesn't vibrate through the car now don't think I could of handled that all the way to santapod on Sunday lol The engine still has the back kicking to the right slightly hopefully fitting the proper mounts will cure that.

Did you have any issues with the front driveshafts too mate?

When my o/s mount went it felt like the engine was trying to get out!? Found the n/s driveshaft tripod had gone too... Stupidly, I went for another set of standard ones, but will go for vibratech/Collins etc before they go again....
