Default Pistons and rods for engine build

Hi guys, as usual me looking for some advice.

Im after new pistons and rods for my engine build. Aiming at 550-600hp with a really strong mid end. 250-280hp at 4000rpm would be awesome.

Current spec list:
BW EFR7670 1.05 external gated
44mm tial wastegate
Mark Shead twin scroll billet collector exhaust manifold
MIS ITB intake
60mm pro alloy intercooler

My 200 block will be machined for 6x longstuds and wrc oil jets. It´s currently on +0,5mm, but the bore is fresh so ready for new pistons.

Im not sure what piston and rod combination to choose as there are so many different alternatives?

I would like 136mm rods to reduce rod angle and piston slap, but what brand / make should I go for? Longer rods requires a special kind of pistons, which are preferred?

Also, what compression should I run on this setup? Clearly it´s going to see boost, what power levels / boost is safe on a non-linered 200 block?

/Andreas

You need a better intercooler than that if running higher than 7.2-1.

Hi Mark,

Didn´t know that. What intercooler is better?
Will be Zircotec coating the manifold, turbine housing, wg and downpipes to try to lower the engine bay temp some.

Its this one:

You have a smaller working window of nice ignition angle on higher comp so you need to have the best intercooler to work within it.
Spec r is best.

What pistons, rings and rods would you recommend with my current intercooler, Mark?

Change your intercooler, You cant go wrong with CP pistons Carrilo or Arrow rods, Others will work but that's what I prefer.

It was bored 4 years ago for a set of mahle pistons for my previous setup. It didn't run for many miles before I decided to rebuild it to another spec. It may need a new bore to match new pistons..

Look at mine at 4000 rpm which is much more than 250 to 280bhp and that is on a less than 500 bhp level, this turbo would do 530bhp if the engine internals were optimised.

Nice. What spec? I don't know exactly what to expect from my setup. Not much info available online once passed T34...
A problem is also that not many tuners in Norway have any experience with the EFR turbos.

I really need an engine builder lol.

Mine is a 7064 with MAD inlet. I have an RS500 style intercooler and I think Mark mentioned that the inlet temps were holding things back a little and a spec R one is on the list of improvements

You might be best off shipping the engine over to Mark Shead at MAD and getting him to spec it all correctly. His engines are known to make the power and stay together.

My engine internals are all standard as far as we can tell without pulling it apart, my car has a big history folder and has been quite well known in the mags and there is no evidence of cams, pistons or headwork. Plus the power is quite close to what Mark was expecting and has seen on other standard internals (I think I am right in saying that)

Its right probably from figures on mine. Tests from RS500 to Spec-R.
Have seen MINUS temps on mine on intial acceleration & +8 after a hard acceleration run. With the RS500 the Water Injection would cut-in after a few seconds to try to keep it under +40. Its like the difference between an old GT Turbo & an EFR.

You need to get the bore sizes checked and checked for wear, You can get piston sizes for any bore.

Thank you for all your replies, this build is taking its time. I can't seem to afford the CP pistons and Carillo rods at the moment as I've just bought a new apartment.

I see PEC conrods are a fair bit cheaper than Carillo. Are they any good?
They are often paired with Wossner pistons on ebay. Will Wossner pistons do the job if turned down to appropriate compression? I only find them at 8:1 CR.

Just looking for alternatives, I know that CP and Carillo are preferred.
