No as its solid colour. Some painters do it but it costs more and can add complications.
If painting metallic then I'd use a 2 pak base coat if available as water base looks uneven and blochy. You only need to look at some new cars to understand what I mean.
Glasurit 55 line is quite good for 2k base and is available in moonstone which is good for me

As said straight colour is better and easier to work with.
Have you got somewhere in mind to do it?! If not Best bet is ring around and see where will do it with 2k striaght colour as a lot of places don't use it anymore or 2k Basecoat as they want to try and make everyone use water based these days, which as said isn't as user friendly as good old 2k is.

I think for affect the 2k would lye better on the panels if done by a decent painter as it can look heavy or soup like on panel edge's, but it is the period finish and the colour is alot more pronounced than if clear/base..
Blacks look Black rather than fighting through the shine of clear if that makes sense..lol..
I like water based for its ease/cleanliness and it covers very well, again if applied properly before clear..
My frst will Hopefully be done in its old skool coating so imop I would say do the same op there is just something about freshly done solid colours

They have used all of it over the years Andy but when your painting cars worth 100's of thousands and sometimes in the millions they find it not that great. BASF,ICI,PPG,SANDOX to name a few, even with some top guns from Sata, devillbiss etc.
Like I said its all personal choice I worked for Honda 17 years and seen some poor paint on new cars on the reds they had to tint the lacquer
I also find water can give shadows and you need more paint to cover.

Paul

Well that's the main difference, insolvent you can paint pretty much anywhere but water based relies on humidity/air movement temperature etc etc.
Any modern booth should be fine these days and just takes a bit longer in older booths but can still be done right!!
All mclaren road cars at work are painted in waterbased as im sure all car plants are now which is why a lot of bodyshops have also been pushed to waterbased as well.
Luckily they never got waterbased lacquer right so that's still good old 2k!!

Yea you can get waterbased lacquer but don't know anyone who use it!! Never used to work as well as 2k dunno bout now though.
We had to start using wb wow primer last year due to emission etc for the plant size, tbh is so pissy doesn't cover half the fine scratches that 2k wow used too!!
Best bet is still to decide where your taking it and speaking to them, like I said different bodyshops will/won't use certain products 😉
