Default Vehicle speed signal needed for L8 ECU?

I am making plans to run all aftermarket gauges in my Cossie clone since my car was originally Canadian market and the instrument cluster is in metric. Plus, I plan a full compliment of gauges and want it to look uniform. I have a pretty good idea on the pressure and temp gauges as well as the fuel level and tachometer but the speedometer gauge is the challenge. Rather than attempt to find a mechanical to electronic adapter, I am going to just install a GPS sensing unit and get rid of my speedo cable all together.

My question is, does anyone know if the L8 (specifically) ECU requires a vehicle speed signal to function?

Not much to speak of right now but it's getting there. It's at a restoration shop getting the full treatment. I am trying to sort out several issues including the instruments and wiring. Going to have it painted bright red.
