Default Dash temp gauge reading max all the time HELP!

Hello all,

Hoping someone can help as I'm sat here scratching my head.

I've been hooking up all of the electrics on the cossy and after a morning messing around with the abs lights I cracked it

However, I now have a temp gauge that reads max when the ignition is turned on.

So far I've tried a new brass sensor, my old one and it's no different.

I've removed the single cable and earthed it direct, no change.

I've tested it and I've got -11.9 volts at it.

I've checked the cable from the back of the dash to the sensor and its 100% continuity

It's doing my head in, it's the only electrical problem left......

Any ideas anyone? (thanks in advance)

The wire to the sender is probably broken somewhere and making earth to the chassis.

I thought the same but then thought again..lol! If it had short to ground, then why/how has it got batt. voltage?

It could also be the wire is stripped somewhere and it's making contact with 12v. Another option is that the gauge is broken making contact internally.

Thanks for the reply's, still no further forward....I have tried 2 spare sets of clocks I have and they both max out with ignition on.

I think the only way forward is to cut the wire from the clocks to the sender and route a new one direct.

I noticed once the single wire from the sender gets to the clocks it branches of into 2, I can only guess it goes to the fuse box?

Really can't remember tbh.......I was concentrating on the abs light, then noticed it.

I've not messed about with any of the wiring near the battery as I was on inner wings with front sensors.

Thinking I'll cut the wire at the back of the clocks and the gauge should drop, if it does I'll route a new wire direct........

I did have a 30amp blade fuse melted and totally destroyed in the fuse box on number 11?

It's not supposed to have a fuse in there according to the fuse lid, so I changed it to 20 amp and it's still ok

According to my electrical diagrams there should be a 15A fuse on position 11 and it's used for the fuel pump. But the schematics are general Sierra, so I'm not sure if this is the same for the Cosworth.

For the coolant temp wire there should be only a single wire from the sender to the clocks. I can't think of any reasons why the wire would go to the fuse box.

Mine did the same thing, found the connector that goes to the sensor was touching the block. Moved it and that sorted it out.

As said the wire is shorted to ground!

The live comes from the PCB, therefore it would suggest someone has maybe spliced into the ground and that has shorted?

That sounds like the fan fuse (common problem).

Cosworth pump fuse is behind the dash.

It's sorted now, I was chasing the wrong wire.

For some reason it changes from green/red stripe through a multi plug under the dash into red/whitestripe, then doubles back on itself across the bulkhead into the engine bay

It was nipped up against the kick panel earthing out
