Default which engine oil for yb cosworth?!

hi there,
which engine oil is the correct or best for my yb cosworth engine?

i use a 200 engine, cosworth hd-oil-pump and it runs round about 340bhp.

normally synthetic or full synthetic, which specs?!

i love the smell from ester based oil LOL

what do you think about motul competition 15w50 full sythetic?

or is a 10w40 enough?

I have always used 10/60 Castrol but you'll get a difference of opinion with regards to oil usage

Why a 10W-40 if you can use a good 0W-40 which is much better in cold protection and hot stability (esp. if the 10W-40 is only a mineral oil). And please don't worry about this silly urban legends.
Btw. is it for daily use? Then I would use a good 5W-50 full synthetic. Nice cold protection and hot stability. For the conscience you should install an extra oil cooler with thermostat.
All in all you can say its difficult too find "THE" best oil. It depends of your driving style and usage like daily driver, race trim, short trips etc. But a good 5W-50 full synth is a good allround oil for all seasons IMO.

Not to say it's a bad oil but wouldn't recommend this cause of the bad cold visco of 15W.. and you don't need such a high HTHS (shear stability) unless your engine revs over 10 000 RPM.
Du weißt ja, viel hilft nicht immer viel.

This is why I don't use 10W, 15W 20W cold visco.

In a YB running 340bhp, a 10w-50 is likely to be the best choice

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Cossiemainful is right about the stability and cold viscosity of something like a 5w-40, but it might be a little thin, especially if it gets hard use.

I'm using 10W-60 Castrol Edge FST right now and my hydraulic tappets are a bit noisy on cold start. They rattle for like 2-5 minutes so I will change oils to thinner ones. My question is, would the popular ester based 10W-50 cure the problem, or should I go for even thinner oil like 10W-40 or 5W-50? Does 10W-40 still have good enough hot protection capabilities, as I'm not doing trackdays or very very hard driving on road, especially as 10W-40 was one of the oils that Ford Cosworth handbook proposes.

Car runs ~300 bhp, engine has done 100 000 miles, street used and I use it on summers mostly and ambient temperatures are usually +5-20 celsius.

I'd also like to hear your experiences on oils concerning the tappet noise that Cosworths are known for...

Hi

I can't say it will definitely cure the issue, but a 10w-50 or a 5w-50 is likely to help with the noise as they will flow better.

A 10w-40 might well be okay if you use a good one, but I'd probably go for a 5w-50 over that as it will give be thinner when cold and a bit thicker when hot.

Ok, I'll try a good 5W-50, that should quieten up the tappets a bit. Not much selection with this grade but I take these two should be good:

Oilman - What would you recommend for a hard track use cosworth yb? running approx. 400-500bhp


It's not a daily runner although does see the occasional road drive on a nice day, but always let to warm right up to temp before actually driving

Just ordered 5L of nanodrive from you for my cossie, got 10% discount so worked out Ł50.09 delivered which is good. Look forward to seeing what the cars like with it, currently has millers 5w-50 in it so will see if the nano drive performs any different.

When is it too thick??
At hot temp due to 60 wt ? Under hard track use??
What oil pressure should I be looking for then at revs with:
Std oil pump? 50 psi
or
High pressure oil pump? 70 psi

Dropping to under 30 psi at idle when hot.

I would say that as it's stage 1 with light use, it will benefit from a better flow rate from a 10w-50.

Yes, it would be too thick when hot. Here is some information about why we don't recommend 10w-60 very often.

I don't know what pressure it should be reading, but people often worry too much about oil pressure rather than flow rates, it's the flow that gives the protection. Also, it can be that thinner oils flow better, helping to generate a higher pressure.

FYI

Mobil1 10w60 is recommended by Graham Goode Racing, cst @ 100deg is 22.7.
These are old large tolerant, high output engines.

Over the years, a lot of companies have recommended 10w-60 for a lot of different vehicles, in many cases they were miles off the mark. I agree with what you're saying about the bigger tolerances and I would say the 10w-60 isn't the worst choice for a Cossie, but I think there are better options.
