Default Sierra power steering

Hello everyone, I was just wondering if there are anyways to make my steering lighter on my sierra, it's a 2ltr ghia so it has power steering. But I have a few different extra lock mods like modified hubs etc, and this has left the steering really heavy which I only properly noticed yesterday (had these mods for quite a while but only put the steering to proper test yesterday). So Im wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how I can leav my steering lighter?
Thanks for any help

Fit a group a pump setup? It's higher pressure than standard so it should make the steering lighter? Probably cost a fortune to do though

Sounds like it would be a good job but yea I'm sure it would cost a fortune and moneys tight atm,
Another thing it does is if I'm doing a lot of heavy steering (figure of 8's etc) it will blow power steering fluid out of the bottle cap, does this indicate a problem somewhere? Or is it just because of the heavy steering?
Thanks again for any help

Hi chap,

It might not be any help but have a read of this thread below

https://passionford.com/forum/ford-s...-roll-bar.html

Ignore the title about Anti roll bar as there is some info from Ronnie Amis and others about power steering fluid boiling/blowing out cap etc.

Are you still on the original PAS fluid reservoir cap? What year is your car? Might be worth trying a later year cap in view of the changes that Ford made on the Cosworth after half the the production run of 3-doors had been built. Either that or using a cooler/Spec R tank and cap.

If you've increased the caster/steering effort the pump will have to 'work' harder and the fluid will get hotter.

One of the later Integrale EVO variants even used a PAS fluid cooler on the standard car as it was such as issue on twisty roads with lots of direction changes

Cheers

That was an interesting read I must say
Im still using the standard cap I think and my car is year 92.
Well having the hubs modified I suppose will leave the pump having to work harder? But maybe more caster would be useful for me also as it will help bring steering back to centre rather than me having to steer like a madman? I'll post a vid of Ueo in his ae86 and give an idea of the way I want my car to b able to steer..

Watch how he can just let go of the steering and it pretty much steers itself, my car would never do that.
And I know there is a big difference in an ae86 and a sierra but surely I could get somewhere close to that?

It does sound as if the fluid may be boiling.

Did you not have a thread on how to add PS?

If so have you fitted the PAS cooling pipe?

No my car has always had power steering so that wasn't my thread,
So it should have that cooling pipe as standard?

Oh yes I remember that was someone else now, plus the model you mention gives the game away as well, yes it runs along the passenger chassis rail?

Im looking to fit an inline cooler on my power steering. If I cut the rubber part of the hose between the pump and the rack and fit joiners, jubilee clipped tightly etc do you think it will hold?
The pressure isnt that great is it? or the plastic bottle would blow etc
any thoughts?

The drift car has insane camber and caster! that is the reason!
It is not possible to do that on a Sierra!
Only the best drivers can handle a Sierra!

You don't need a cooler, you just need to have a longer pipe

The 24v granadas had a pipe that used to go up into the wing and around the washer bottle to give it additional cooling but if the fluid is good and the pump is working fine it's going to be the steering geometry that's causing the issues

Didn't the last of the line Integrales have a PAS fluid cooler homologated as they suffered from the same problem on twisty rallies. Maybe overkill for a road car but the late ones had them
