Probably wear in either the speedo drive or cable.

Sounds like the speedo cable has got a kink in it. Try a new cable.

I recently had the same fault. This is what I did:
  1. Opend the engine bay.
  2. Identify and loosen the speedo cable.
  3. Get underneath the car where the cable goes into the gearbox/speedo drive and remove the cable. There is a circlip holding it.
  4. I took the dash apart.
  5. Removed and unplugged the wiring from the instrument panel. Becarefull not to yank it.
  6. You have to unclip the speedo cable holder off the casing of the back of the instrument pannel where it is connected.
  7. The inner cable(spring like cord) will slide out the outer cable casing/sheath.
  8. Once out, inspect for kinks.Inspect the sheath for kinks or damage. If none, lubricate the cord and slide back into the casing/sheath.
  9. Plug back wiring on the the instrument panel, also dont forget to clip the speedo cable back on. usually its the white connecter.
  10. Put the dash back together.
  11. Go to the engine bay and manipulate the cable so it gets routed nicely and neatly to the gearbox.
  12. With a longnose plier you have to insert the cord into the speedo drive. then clip the sheath mounting back into position with the circlip.
  13. Take it for a test drive.
If you still have a problem after that, then its probably the speedo drive needs repair, you need a new speedo cable, or your speedometer has gone faulty.

Cheers,

I had that after I took the speedily housing out, it turned out the cable wasn't located on the back of the speedo properly. Worth checking, incase....
