Default P.a.s question. 3 door Cosworth.

My Cosworth has developed a fault with the pas.

Few questions...
Should you be able to stop the wheel on the end with your hand, with a tad of difficulty?
should the belt off end of crank pulley to pas pulley be tight? Its got around 2/3 inch of play?

Basically when out in the car the steering keeps going jerky and it goes heavy like the pas has failed. On lookingive found the symptoms above. It seems to me the belt has stretched but dont know how believeable that is?

Cheers.

Belt needs to be tight otherwise it slips and causes the problems you mention. The pas pump bracket is adjustable to take up the slack

2/3 of an Inch isn't much play though it doesn't have to be dead tight as will do the bearings in on the pump. Unless you mean 2-3 inches. New belt though and adjusted right will at least remove it from list of possible causes

I assume you mean can you stop the pulley rotating with the engine running?

No, not without loosing your hand.

It is quite common for the belt to stretch, which can cause the problem you have, but usually you will notice it as when the system is under load, i.e. full lock you will hear a "screeching", where the belt is slipping.

There is a little play in the belt, the tension can be adjusted slightly on the pump.

Wait and see if the belt change makes any difference first, if not then change the fluid.

Martin
