Default Finding an air leak - how to test?

Hi all,

OK - convinced I have an air leak on my sapphire as bit by bit its starting to do funny things.

Pretty confident its the plenum gasket - cheap and easy to do, but does anyone have a trick up their sleeve for pressurising the system and finding the leaks this way too?

Cheers
Huw

I have done this a couple of times on different Cosworths. I take of the hoose between turbo and ic on the turbo end. Block it whit a spray can or simillar. Then use 2,5-3bar pressure air in one of the vakum hoose on inlet. You will hear it if it`s a big leak or you can use soap water to spray on, and look after bubbles, this work for me

spray wd40 over the engine, if the engine note changes you've got a leak.

As above but use brake cleaner where you think the leak is

Thats not always true, you can have a leak under boost, and not under vakum.

Maybe a crazy idea but i always have thought having a boost pipe purposely made with a one way valve that could be used to test for leaks. So you could test regualry quickly .

We have rubber plugs whit valves, who we use on trucks. You don`t have to use a one way valve, because the pressure will not stay any way, some valves are always open. Or you will have to take inlet cam out

I use the cap of a spraycan and fit a valve in it, the one where you can presurise you car tyre with. Then remove the hose from airbox to turbo and fit this cap in a piece of 60mm hose with some good clamps and put this on the turbo. This way you set the pressure on the whole system including the turbo. Then put 2.5 Bar to it and listen for any sissling noices. You will be surpriced how much leaks you will find!
