Default Sapphire boot lock

Hi all, have been trying to open the boot of my sapphire using my key but I'm not getting anywhere. Have tried injecting the lock with wd40 but this hasn't made a difference? Anybody know how I can remove the lock to see if it's busted or needs replacing, thanks very much in advance.

You need to get behind the lock to remove it, i.e. open boot.

You can get in via the car to have a look, worst case scenario.

From memory there is a plate that slides across the back of the lock to hold it in.
Slide plate out and lock should be free

As the others have said, I said you have to do it from behind the lock, i.e. boot open, as I presumed you could not get into the boot.

Finally managed to remove the lock after all the advice given and found that it was jammed up with dirt. I removed the e-clip holding the white plastic disc on the back (which I assume hits the arm which would release the lock when you turn the key), cleaned up the rusty spring and dirt underneath + the dirt in the barrel. I have been able to turn the key in the lock and can see a couple of the cogs in the barrel turning but it doesn't move the white plastic disc at all so assume its shot. Fortuntately have just won a new working lock set on ebay so plan on replacing this when it comes in. Thanks again

Looks like the replacement I bought is in the same condition as the original. Am I correct in saying that when you turn the key it should move the cogs which should then turn the plastic disc on the end as the lock seems to be a solid chunk of metal and I can't see how the white disc is activated as it doesn't look like the lock connects to it??. Any help would be appreciated please. All the best

Dont want to ask a stupid question, but did the new one come with a key? Must admit, I can't remember what turns what at the back, I've not had a barrel on mine for years... They're pretty common to gunge up and seize, as the boots used less (with the key), especially as you have the remote lever by the seat

Ford can supply rebuild kits for these locks IIRC.

Its not a stupid question....I bought it with a key. After seeing that the cogs on the underside of the new barrel were mucky I left the whole thing to soak in WD40 overnight and also sprayed the key hole. The key turns about a quarter turn to the right before it seems to stop but the cogs move...I'm assuming that a quarter turn is enough for the lock to operate (but not sure as never had a Sierra before). I also had a couple of door locks thrown in and they seem a similar set up where when you turn the key they move a plastic cap on the end but these have an interior barrel to the external casing, the boot lock looks like it has an internal casing which houses the cogs but this does not look like it moves the external casing when you turn the key..it all looks solid at the back...hope this helps but if not I might have to post a little video...thanks again

From (faint) memory, the boot key only turns one way, as it only has to open the boot, unlike, on a early saff, where it locks/unlocks, allowing you to push the button. With yours, the only use the barrel has is to open, so, the key just turns a little way, to release the catch... Sorry, I just don't remember exactly how the mechanism goes together, I got hit from behind about a month after I got the car and got them to de-lock it during the repair....
Hope my waffling is of some help!

What he ^^ says, never had a later Saph but they did not have the push button release, the boot unlocks with the key and by what said sounds about right, it shouldn't be possible to turn the key to the left, I would imagine?

It's also possible to remotely release the boot and fuel cap from within the car, as you know.

If you get stuck, put some pics up, might jog the memory a bit!
It was the remote release and the fact my barrel that was sticky (and my mate hitting me up the arse!) that made me go for de-locking it!

Thanks for the responses but have just worked out whats wrong and as such have decided to use the replacement black outer lock housing to blank it off. Basically as said the key turns the cogs, its whats on the opposite side of the cogs that determines if the cap on the end of the barrel turns to hit the boot release. When you turn the key it moves the cogs to create a trough on the reverse side of the lock barrel to accommodate a pin that stays proud in the barrel when the boot is locked. Once the pin falls into the trough in allows the whole barrel to rotate within the black lock housing therefore moving the cap on the end of the barrel to hit the boot release. Sadly having cleaned it for 2 hours (on and off) two of the cogs won't quite turn around enough to create the trough (as its too gummed up with muck). I tried to shorten the pin as the two cogs that won't move are on the far ends but the pin won't sit right once in the housing. Given that some of you have said about blanking yours off its makes sense for me to do the same...also acts as a bit of extra security. Sorry that after everybodys help I couldn't get it working but essentially the poor design allows too much muck to clog the cogs which need to move freely to create the trough! Hopes this makes sense!

Glad you sorted somethin in the end! Just as a bit of warning, the catch on the rear panel has a little 'up/down' lever that allows you to disable the remit release. Check its in the position before you rely on the remote!!! It shows it in the handbook, if you have one... Just as an extra piece of mind, I also took out one of the seat back release mechanisms, so I could get in the boot from inside.....
