Default How to read 3 door fault codes?

How do I read the fault codes on a 3 door? I've heard you can use an led??
My engine management light comes on under boost, engine misses then backfires then engine light comes on. It's only just started happening.

If its still on L1 ecu you just short out 2 wires in a plug under the dash and it flashes the management light with a series of codes that tells you where the fault is, it's a 3 pin connector but I just put a paperclip in to make the connection.
