Default Air Conditioning unit in sapphire cosworth

What year did the Air Conditioning unit in sapphire cosworth come out? Was it in 1992 to 1993?
Does anybody have any pictures of their engine bay with this unit fitted?
Are these rare in these cars now?

I have Cossie made in july 1991 and it had AC. I reckon it's been an option since 1988 as the Sapphire Cosworth came. But its way more common among the later 4x4 models.

On the Sierra, I believe that the 2000e (started production in June 1989) was one of the first models to have the a/c fitted.

I was speaking to a person recently about the air conditioning unit.

This is the story he told me and it starts as follows:

Back along time ago, this person owned a 92 sapphire cosworth car with air conditioning fitted. I am told that this unit is fitted on the passenger side area. This owner rang a ford dealer one day and he was looking for a set of new springs for the front of the car. This Ford storeman asked him if it had air conditioning fitted. Owner said there was. The Ford storesman told the owner that because of air conditioning unit fitted, the passenger side spring would be a stronger type spring compared to the drivers side spring.

Is that correct about the 2 front springs?

Yes and no. On normal models, there is a different spring fitted if you have a/c installed, but most 4x4 and Cosworth 4x4 models list a different spring (different height) anyway.

It became a factory option from the mk2 sierra and saff onwards, so from early 1987, but before that it was a dealer fit kit of parts only, supplied by ford and fitted either by the dealers workshop during the pdi or a company called air conditioning services on behalf of the dealer before the car went to the first owner.

The factory option didnt get specced much in the uk, but was more popular in europe.

Was the aircon on early 2.8 XR4x4s only dealer fit? I always presumed it was factory

Only facelift cosworth had it as a factory option. Non facelifts can't have it factory fitted as the power steering pump is mounted under the inlet where the aircon would go. I've seen some aftermarket kits about, but they are totally different.

FWIW, yea, you have to cut the bulkhead abs weld in the bigger air con bulkhead. Some good pics and story here:

I’m after a wiring schematic for how the system is wired up eg

-The electrics have connections into the ECU to cut the power to the pump (clutch) on full throttle
- The hot /cold /position slider has a micro switch to only power the air con when both sliders are fully down
- There’s a led on the blower switch which lights up when air con is on

if anyone has a schematic showing this that they could share please, it’d be appreciated!
