Default abit help required

hi guys iv just bought cossie im curious on few things when i turn igniation on my temp gauge goes sky high once engine is started temp gauge goes back down to bottem of green and refuses to work i have recently changed coolent temp sender really need advice also on the engine it has baileys oil breather the bottem hose leading down to the bottem of the engine isnt attached is this right .....????????????

On my Bailey breather I have 4 ports. 1 to cam cover, 1 to kidney breather, 1 to oil return on exhaust side, and one vents to atmosphere which I have running down the bulkhead and ends next to chassis rail. Hope this helps.
