Cosworth Turbo's and water cooling??
I've recently bought a 3 dr cosworth rally car that i'm converting to race in the future classics race series. The engine is a Mountune built item running Pectel T6 management and loom. The turbo is some sort of Mountune hybrid t35??(Looks like a big turbo Escort Cosworth item and is built to run anti lag). Not sure on full spec etc. one thing i've noticed, is the turbo has not got any of the water cooling plumbed up to it. i asked the original owner and he told me that the turbo does not need it. I'm guessing mountune know what they are doing, but i'm a little worried that i'm going to go through turbo's without the water cooling?? Is this a normal modification?? the engine does have a mountune tag, and i'm guessing i could just call them to ask the question. not sure how approachable they are though?

They don't need to run it, for example - the series one RS turbo doesn't have water cooling on the turbo from the factory.
Wouldn't be too hard to plumb it in if you wanted it though?

I for one think you are crazy to not run water cooling if given the option. I run a Greddy TD06-20G on one of my cars and being a plain bearing non water cooled CHRA you need to really pay loads of attention to your oil temps when racing.
So given you mentioned racing it then get water cooling back on it and lessen the heat burden on the oil in the bearings

So the following is accurate for around 2008, I have no idea if it still holds true. The Garret TR30R was used by all the WRC teams with the exception of Subaru who used to use IHI.
You are right in that it didnt use a water cooled CHRA. It relied on air cooling and usual oil lubrication. Big difference that this performance orientated turbo had M50 bearing race (used in jet engine bearings) and silicon-bronze retainer. So design and materials used were all designed around not having water cooling.
Now think about a turbo that is designed to have water cooling the CHRA. It is of a different design and uses different materials based on the expectation that engine coolant is flowing through it.
Lastly, regarding rally cars. How many kms do they put on turbos before they life them or reco them. Given the conditions are very harsh with regards to temp and dust etc....but they are rebuilt frequently...not something we would want to be doing on a road, or even club/track car
Turbo builder builds into the unit certain functionality...I would be using it. Well, thats my 2c anyway
