Default saff cossie rear sub frame/axle.

Ive noticed my cossie needs a bit of welding to the nsr chassis leg. What im wanting to know is when i remove the sub frame/rear axle mount bolts how far will the sub frame/rear axle drop down.If i have to i will drop the who lot but i would rather not.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks.

You don't get much clearance tbh, before you start work, support under the diff first as they are extremley heavy and you woulden't want it falling on top of you!

You have to undo brake pipes, diff mount, beam mounts, shocks, prop, handbrake cable etc just to drop it so you may as well remove it completely.

As Marty says really. Its all pretty solid when bolted up so there isnt much room for movement when a few bolts are un-done.
Have a look through my underside resto thread, it might give you an idea on what room you have when certain bits are removed.

Or well i thought it might of dropped down that little bit so that i could get in and do a bit of welding.

How long did it take you to take the rear axle out.

If you don't need to you can undo the brake lines and the diff mounts and beams mounts plus the arb bolts and the rest can stay there if you aren't planning to moves the car

Just be carefully where you put the axle stands

Even with a tea break, as long as the bolts aren't siezed and you've got air tools it can. E done in about 10 minutes

glenn take the beam out as I can bet you the little bit of welding will turn into a lot as soon as you drop the beam!
they go round the beam mount holes and you can't see that till the the beams out..

Right i will just drop the lot out.So it doesnt take long to drop the axle then.Ive got a electric impact gun so that will help me for time. The only time i have to do my car is on a weekend cause i need it for work.

Normaly this time of year i borrow my mam n dads car and put mine in there garage but my mam isnt very well and they need the car just incase anything happens to my mam.

Id give yourself plenty of time, not just to get the beam out, but for doing the actual repair. Have you had the underside restored yet?? Is it not worth giving yourself a 1 week window and do the lot all at once.

Strip the beam, and paint it, bushes?? paint the floor, tank, hubs etc. All this sort of stuff can be done when the beams out.

Unless your 100% sure the welding isnt that bad, I would be giving myself more than a weekend just in case. But then im a bit of a slow coach

glenn as being said above give yourself time as times the bolt's will just turn but not come loose and you could end up cutting out holes to secure the nut on the other side

but as said when all go's to plan i had mine out in no time

It needs to come off the road for a little while to be done properly mate..... you'll only end up having bother and having to cobble it back together without it being the way you want it if you do it in a weekend......

I diden't need any air tools at all! It does take a while though, also you will have to plug the brake lines, as I had to disconnect mine, and that was only whilst dropping it slightly!

Beam mount bolts are 3/4 and the guide plate's are 7/16 I think, the shocks bottom mount is also 3/4.

while it's out, make sure the cv boots are all ok and not cracked on the insides of the bellows as it's much easier to change them with the axle out than it is with them on the car
