Default Buying a Sierra Cosworth for use as a daily driver

Hello all,

this is my first thread here but this is an idea I've kicked around at Pistonheads for some time. I was advised to ask my questions due to the nature of this forum. I've been thinking about buying a Sierra Cosworth to replace my S60 as my daily driver. It will be my only car, so some sensibility has to come into things but the main thing driving me is that a Sierra Cosworth has always been my 'dream car' alongside a Lancia Delta Integrale.

I'd be looking at buying a 4x4 model, just because I want a 4WD car, and it seems like there are still a few good 4X4 models around at the moment. I do have concerns about the following areas though, and I'd appreciate your thoughts on them:

Rust: Is rust a major issue with these cars? Some I have seen have rust on the doors and wheel arches, some others are fine. It has been suggested to me that the cars without rust are the ones that are being kept garaged and used rarely, and that if I were to use the car daily it would rust away to nothing fairly quickly. I don't have use of my garage for a car, there just isn't enough space so I'd have to keep my car on my drive.

Security: I know all too well the damage caused by bottom feeding car thiefs, and my memory of the Sierra Cosworth was spiralling insurance premiums due to them being stolen and crashed by joy riders. I know this culture has died off a lot, but the Sierra is still something of a relic of a time when cars were nicked without keys. What security measures can I take to protect the car? I was thinking of an alarm, immobiliser and a heavy duty wheel clamp. Would that be sufficient?

Parts and servicing: How much does servicing tend to cost annually? I'll be looking to take the car to a specialist for work. Are parts readily available? A colleague of mine reckons a minor shunt could see the car off due to the lack of easily available parts. If I buy a Sierra, will I forever be taking it to the garage to have various parts stripped out and replaced or should it be fairly hardy if I keep the boost relatively low and keep it well oiled and watered?

Rust and theft are my two main concerns. There are still plenty of Cosworths on the road, so I guessed someone somewhere must be making parts and garages exist that can keep them on the road. If I can be assured that

1) it won't be nicked straight away as long as I fit some good security measures

2) it won't rust away sitting on my drive when I'm not driving it

3) it won't blow up and failure to source some small engine part will see the car off.

Thanks, and I look forward to reading your replies.

welcome.

regaring rust. i don't think they rust any more than other cars of simular age. as most people are keen cosworth fans they tend to be well looked after.
my opinion is. before winter give it a good power wash off underneath and waxoil, then do the same in spring.

servicing. make sure you take it to a decent well known garage. it should certainly be cheaper than a modern car.

security. you can never have enough security as far as a cosworth is concerned.

The only problem i can see is parts if you bump it. most are available second hand, but not new.

fords are good cars, dont get me wrong but i would hesitate to use a 25yr old car for everyday use. if u can afford a cheap run round on the side then yes, otherwise no.

ive used all my saphs for everyday cars and 2 where a good 400 bhp

its like any other car

keep it clean and no reason to rust away
as all ready said good waxoil undernieth should see you good

they are piss easy to work on and very basic really

any problems you get most can answer for you on here

my advise is when you get one take it to a good reputable tuner in the ford scene for a check over

i would now only stick to a good stage 1 set up now for everyday

and there is always plenty of parts for sale new and second hand

security ,,,, get plenty lol

and obviously the more you spend the better car you get so dont think a 4 grand cossie will be the tits

I agree, a well looked after Cosworth should be reliable, but they are old cars now.

If you do get one i'd go for as close to standard as possible.
