Tried to push the piston back, but it won't budge ?? ... handbrake is not engaged ...

You need a tool that rotates the piston at the same time as you're pushing it back.

I didn't have the tool so used pipe grips to turn the piston and a G clamp to push the piston in

The pistons are threaded, so as said you need a "re-wind" (Not by Craig David ) tool!

By the way as a word of warning the "Laser" one which Halfords sell do not fit these, as the pistons are bigger!

Incidentally you can also use a pair of "Circlip pliers" if you have them to hand!

just remember that the pins need to be orientated to the 12/3/6/9 o'clock position in the caliper when you refit the brake pads as otherwise they won't fit

also make sure you slacken the handbrake cable as this will give you more movement in the caliper and will help in the next step

when you refit everything, start the car up and, when the brake pump finishing pumping and buzzing, press the brake pedal first to push the piston out and clamp it up BEFORE you adjust the handbrake
