A huge amount depends on height of the car, a lot of people lower the car so much that 205 on front is about it, as these sit within the wing/arch, but a lot depends on suspension type and offset also, with 235 being possible on the rear, even tyre profile plays a part.
As an example I run 225/45x17 all round, it gently rubs the front wheel arch liners at the front, going to put some cable ties on to pull the liners forward 1/2", but my car height is about 1 1/2" higher than std and works perfect for me.
