What he ^^ said, thats the most likely cause, if not the sender itself.

Yup, the sender's in the top of the tank, and the electrical connector's between the tank and the body. Be ready to replace the captive nuts that the tank bolts onto as they tend to escape once they've got a few years under their belt.

Also, the dash clocks are earthed behind the driver's kick panel - make sure none of those are corroded, loose, or broken.

check the wiring to the sender too. I had this with my cossie no gauge at all. Looked at the wiring and it was all dog clips! NICE! so cut and soldered all the wires together no problems since.
