Default Cosworth sump drain plug size ?

as above really,think mine is about to strip,so need to helicoil it

Defo M14 x 1.5, I've just drilled mine out and re filled it with the tig as wasn't happy with the state of the thread, then redone from scratch.

Just redone mine while the engine was out made a bush and tig'd it in, a M14 x 1.5 tap was £21 thou

It is indeed an M14x1.5 as standard.

No need to stay with m14x1.5 though, i would go with what ever size tap/helicoil you can get cheaply and easily, and buy a plug to suit, IIRC there is a bit of meat around the thread to go to M16>

That's bloody expensive, my tap/die kit was only £60 for a 40 piece!!

I know but I needed it quick so I went and bought one from a tap and die specialist so they only sell real top quality ones.

There is a good bit of material around the plug thread, sealey do a sump plug thread repair kit, assume you might be able to get the individual sizes ?, if you can't scrounge the use of a garage kit.
I've seen a lot of threads fixed in situ, personally this fills me with horror so I always take the sump off to fix, although on some steel sumps I've made a boss, cleaned the whole area after draining oil and welded the boss to the outside with 100% success.

just ordered a kit off the bay, £45,gonna be honest,i'm gonna fix in situ,will pour plenty of fluid down the engine to flush it out,and will have a good inspection after drilling it out
