Default Warning light on dash of 3dr

I have just put a battery on my car and cranked it over to see if there is a spark at the plugs, which there isn't! I have had the whole loom out of the car a while ago as i bare shelled it for repairs and a respray so I was expecting a few problems after refitting it all.
When I first turn the ignition there is an exclamation mark at the far left above the clock flashing orange at me (not sure if that's just the brake fluid warning light?) and at the far right a red light which stays on even as I crank the engine, is this something to do with engine management and possibly why there is no spark?

3DR's do have an EML, they also have coolant level, brake pad, brake level etc warning lights as part of the AWS, usually when one flashes when the ignition is switched on it means there is a fault on the circuit indicated, however in the EML case I believe the flashing relates to the flash code output from the ECU, so for example say 5 flashes means MAP sensor problem.

I always thought the EML symbol was the same as the one of today?

If you have no spark, then you need to look toward the CPS sensor/wiring first, a good clue is if the fuel pump is priming? If not then the above will result in these situations.

The one which I think is the EML is a red light but it's not flashing, just permanently lit up. Im sure this light was coming on intermitently years ago when i once had a problem with the CPS causing misfires but it's been 5 years since I've had a battery and power to this car so I've forgotten quite a bit in that time!
The fuel pump is not priming, so you think the first area to check is the CPS? Any specific checks to make? I have a mate coming round Thursday or Friday to take a look so any information you could give in advance would be very useful. Thanks

Yes I would suspect the CPS, first check the wiring, make sure the connector is properly connected, they can loose the grip on the pins and thus a bad connection, also has the ECU defo got power,as your had it apart you may of missed a wire perhaps?

I don't know if there's power to the ECU and I wouldn't even know how to check if theres power to it (that's how bad my electrical skills are!) but I'll get my mate to check when he comes round and also tell him that the CPS circuit could be the problem, from what I can see the plug is in fully and there's no damage to the wiring.
Should the fuel pump prime even if there's no power to the ECU?
Also there is no fuel in the tank as I dont actually want to the start the car yet, would it need to have fuel in the system to prime or should it still try to prime anyway?

It should still try to prime, and no if there is no power to the ECU, the pump won't run, you need to see power at pin 20 of ECU connector as this is the 'Power pin', as you look at the ECU this is the 2nd to the right on the bottom row.

Hi,
Check if you hav'nt forgetted one ground wire (brown or black color), just behind your battery, during installation.

No I don't have a ground wire behind the battery, which part of the loom does this wire come from?

Behind the battery, I mean you have several brown wires connected to the negative.
Often, when you change the battery, one of them is forgetted.

Just to let you know this problem has been solved and I now have a spark, there was two issues causing this, firstly the wrong rotor arm given to me at halfords and secondly a green relay which had come apart in the drivers footwell.
Still have no fuel pump prime but I have a seperate thread about that.
Thanks for replies.
