Weird hold back at full throttle on my 2wd
I've just joined the the wonderful world of cossie ownership with a nice 2wd sapphire. Only it has a bit of of problem... If I give it full (or nearly full throttle) as soon as it comes on boost it suddenly feels like all the power has been cut out, combined with a loud vibration type noise. If I give it less throttle (and feed in more as the revs rise) it's fine and pulls like a train. Any of you much more experienced people got any idea what it could be?

Check/set your plug gaps to 0.65mm as it could well be the spark is getting blown out.
Better still if not already fit a group a coil, about £35, and the best plugs you can, up to stage1 AGPR12PP8, after stage 1 go for IK31's, oh and decent leads such as Magnecor.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to change the plugs when I got the time over the next few weeks anyway so I think I'll fit a group A coil at the same time. I'll check the vac hoses too.
It smells like it's running rich at idle (I'm guessing that this tells me very little though!). Any way of telling that it's definitely running lean? Am I right in thinking that I'll see some evidence on the plugs (melting/discolouration)?

Forget plug reading on a cossie, if they don't show rich then it is too lean!!
The idle CO screw really only has an influence up to around 2000rpm, so it could be rich low down but lean at the top end!!
It would not hurt to give it a major service, with fuel fliter as thuis is often neglected by many"caring" owners, on my ownb car it was 12 years old!!
Buy a £15 ebay fuel pressure gauge and check the rail pressure, one car I did recently was only producing 2psi boost, but drove ok just no power, a simple plug regap had it sorted with 22psi, it blew the spark out at higher boost/revs where more current is needed to produce the spark, so no combustion took place due to misfire so no exhaust gas to spin turbo!!

It'll get a new fuel filter at the same time I do the plugs. I'll check the fuel pressure too. I'm also doing oil+filter, any recomendations for oil? (synthetic obviously - 5W30 ok?). While I'm working on it is there anything else I should be changing?
I can't remember the ECU/TPS off the top of my head to be honest, I'll have a look through the big stack of receipts and see if i can find out.
On the subject of ECUs, is there any software that does the job of 'IAW monitor' without costing 200 quid? I'm thinking that this kind of software makes setting up the car properly less of a 'flailing around in the dark' exercise!

the only alternative to IAW Monitor is to get a pectel or collins ecu monitor that reads the same datastream but displays it on an in car display rather than a laptop

I have same prob on my 4x4 , took out agpr12pp put 071 plugs in at 0.6 gap and for 60 miles of driving it was rapid and even the two stage boost worked , then when i went back to it , sounded like it was running on three , when i checked the plugs , no3 cylinder plug was black and damp looking rest were dark brown with tips going lighter , widend the gap to 0.8 and it is back to how it was with the agpr12pp plugs in but it runs fine boost seems to build up strong until 'booted' or over about half way down on accelerator. are 071 plugs wrong for stage 1 ??? can't afford msd trip till after xmas and would like to sort b4 if i could . it must be something simple if it went ok for 60 miles with new plugs surely ???? don't want to go to get tuned with wrong plugs in either really .
thanks in advance people .

Ya should be ok with std plugs running stg 1 with a 0,6mm gap, worth also as above fitting a group a coil and good leads.
Also check ya dizzy cap and rotor are in good condition, check phase gap and position.
Good luck

Thanks. IAW looks a great piece of software (and appeals to the computer geek in me). Is there any way I can identify my ECU (or type of ECU?). The history has an invoice which has an entry for 'upgraded ecu' but is light on other info!
I bought the car from someone who took it as a trade in because it looked so tidy, the seller was a little fuzzy on the details.

cozmeister has a good page that may help you identify the ecu
http://www.bluecossie.com/index.php?...d=63&Itemid=25
the ecu will be behind the removable panel in front of the passenger seat. there will be 2 ecu's in there - the one on top is the abs one.
