I would check the connections and make sure they arnt all corroded. Ive had 2 sierras now 1 hatch back n a cossie and ive cleaned off the corrosion on both of them. It souldnt be that hard to cut the connections off and put new spade connectors on.

The best long term bet is to solder them to the loom, just scrape off the galvanising on the tracks and solder with silver solder.
If you put a 1N5408 DIODE(about 7p) between the brake lite and fog wire you get the fogs to light up with the brake lights but still work as fogs on thier own, MOT freindly and legal, makes a hell of a difference, if you don't want the rear fog light switch to light each time you brake insert another in the feed from front to rear.

yeah that sounds just like the common problem we have with our merkurs. we just clean the connector and add a ground wire from the "circuit board" on the tail light to the body somewhere. 99% of the time that takes care of the flashing tail lights.

Maplin's for these as cheap easy ready to go.
You can use any 1N4000 series RECTIFIER DIODES, but 1N5408 is a much heavier duty version of them.
I do this brake lite/fog lite mod on all my cars, with these diodes, the difference in people backing off when you brake and then NOT sitting up your rear is worth it for this alone!!
Adding an earth(seperate) is a good idea, but ONLY stops other circuits drawing through unused/unlit bulbs and does not solve the problem of the crap design that is the cause.
I usually just drill a 3mm hole in each track insert tinned wire and solder, job done permanently, but up to you.

This seriously needs doing on any cos as it is so cheap and amazing effect, only ever been stopped once, showed copper that I still had normal brake light when fogs were switched on so no offence, MOT friendly too.
I also use HALOGEN bulbs in the rear of the car from goffy.
