Info on Cossy ECT sensor
Hi all maybe ya all know this but if ya suspect a fault with ya ECT sensor Ys can bypass it. My car was choking and dying when warm after changing the ECT and nearly everything else. Then i got some great advice from my bro and graham goode. Pull the plug off and puy a split pin or similar in the plug thus bypassing the sensor. Then the brain gets a warm engine message and dunt over fuel, ya can then drive home unlike me as i learned the hard way. 100 quid for ride on rescue truck 200 quid for ford not to fix it, think in my case ford pulled on the wires instead of the plug and moved the connections back into the plug so they not connect. So if this advice saves 1 person the stress i had then alls good.
Mine stopped in the middle of nowhere in Norway and could of got her home and saved 300 quid.

At least then you would be able to melt the pistons on the way home, the better way is to use a 27 K ohm resistor in the line, as this equates to a 90 C hot engine.
Ford/wm ecu will keep going leaner with it disconnected.

ok good to know but suppose its ok short term to check sensor. Believe sensor kicks out 5 volts on warm engine so 12 would tell the brain its at melting point he he. cheers

Sensors don't work like that.
They have a refference signal(output) of around 5 volts, on most ecu's depending on how much resistance there is will determine how much is fed back.
The ploy with the wire is certainly ok to check, but the mere act of disconnecting will tell you if it is duff(by a long way) or whether there is a borken wire etc, due to it changing or not as the case may be.
It is just important that you do not thrash the car with the wire trick as it will go unbeleivably lean at no resistance.

Thanks again for the info. Thought the car was ok again on monday as i messed about with the plug thinking it had bad connection on the new ECT sensor, but maybe i not let it warm right up because yesterday i started her and let her warm up hoping i could take her out for a drive. But she choked and died again damn it, did wire trick and she fired up and ticked over fine. plugged it back on and shes a none starter again. So ive ordered a new ECT from ford over here prob b about 50 quid but at least i know (hope) it will be ok. Last 1 i got thro post so maybe mr postie played football with the package. Let ya know if it works or if the rest of my hair is out. A gallon of petrol insides looking tempting, dont ya just love cossys.

It is unusual for them to be faulty new, but unfortunately you do get a few.
Do a continuity test on the wires as well, as yuo wiggle them just to be safe.
Matt Lewis 01922 692424, is where I get mine, about £15 from memory.
