ATF, not the most suited oil but what we cossie people have to use now, as the oe ford stuff is no longer available.
I use a 1 pint pourer bottle and extend the spout with another pipe and then just do lots of squeezing until it is in, have to keep filling up etc as you can't get it all out in one go.

i believe E-AT/PS fluid from Ford ford/finish nr. 5014519 is the OE stuff.
2 litres will do the job
i'd use a long hose, shoved into the gearbox (@ the right side) and via the engine compartment upwards. @ the other end a funnel attached (even had the funnel fitted with a wire wich was then attached to the hood, so both hands free) just poor it in

I assume you mean the "W" in the 75/W90 for example ?
Just use ATF which does not have a viscosity rating as such, not usually marked anyway.
The european T5 has differences NOT listed in the above article, most particularly the pads on the selector forks which are made of COMPRESSED CARD, ATF attacks these, they break down lose thier friction and so allow the gears to spin freely when trying to select causing delay on shifting, but ATF is supposed to still be the best you can get.
There are at least 33 different variations of the T5, that I have tracked down, they are not an awsomely good box by any standards in thier day or even now, a good one to use instead is PORSCHE P50 as used in the RA28 TOYOTA CELICA, but only built in 77/78.
I am changing to a gear oil for my own one, ATF does not cope anywhere near as good as Gear oil with shear loads.
When ford introduced the escort diesel they filled the gearboxes with ATF as it was thinner, offered less drag and so uppped the mileage(MPG) for sales purposes, it also killed the gearboxes a lot sooner than they need be, but hey ho that is life.

I bought new gb oil for mine today. Even the Ford workshop manual specifies ATF.
Ended up buying Castrol Transmax Z Synthetic. The dude behind the counter says auto fluid for manuals is reasonably common. Something to do with the cooling properties that ATF provides?
First time ive changed since purchasing the car bout 12 months ago. I'll see how it goes.

When I read the post I thought the same thing, that is a physical problem inside the gear box, nothing to do with oil .Unfortunately for RSWilson its a gearbox out to get it fixed.

Hi Guys, Can anyone point me at where to filler plug is on the T5 box please? I've seen a plug tight up against the tunnel in the side of the box. I hope it isn't that.... cheers

So my box went into Gears in Southport today. They recommend ATF and explained that the synchro rings are fibre so anything thicker doesn’t reach the parts other oils doesn’t reach... something like that anyway.😁
