Default running rich?

Ive had a niggle with the car for a while now, long story short ive suspected the iscv being faulty so i cleaned it and av since disconnected it aswell as set the base idle, thought it was fine till earlier. When the car is in the normal operating temp range it seems to choke itself a bit to the extent where it will cough and splutter and run on 3 cylinders if you rev it say at the lights or when reversing or even sometimes after coming off boost and comeing to a stand still untill you give it some stick and clear it. When "i clear it out" theres loads of black smoke. So i dont think it can be the iscv does any one have any ideas im really stuck, also there is a smell of fuel vapour when ive give it some checked for leaks ahd avent found any, dont know if this is related to the other problems or not. By the way its stg 3 2wd

You need first to check the CO and set it to around 2.5% CO.
If the ECT has not been changed for a few years it would be a wise investment to put a new one in first, as they are not expensive, you will easily save this much in fuel.
Clearly the car is running rich and the ECT is the most likely suspect, though others can be, MAP, ACT, Fuel Reg, check fuel reg by sucking on the vac pipe to see if you can suck petrol if you can the diuaphragm has holed, there are other things these are just the most likely.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does the ECT do? Just had my car checked and its very rich until it comes on boost, where the fuelling is fine. I have no running issues like krisberic, but i was wondering if my sensor could need replaced?

ECT= Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, this as it's name suggest tells the ECU how hot/cold the engine is.
This sensor is the MAIN corrective factor for the CO, as this(CO) is determined to a large extent by the engine temperature/load plus a few other things but mainly temp.
New ones can be had around Ł10 delivered from Matt Lewis 01922 692424.
