Default intermitent problem

over the past couple of days my 2wd saph has started cutting out pretty randomly. it will cough and splutter then completely cut out. it will turn over fine a few times but not start until about the 4th or 5th try and before it starts there seems to be plenty of grey smoke. any help would be appreciated as i have been racking my brain about it.

cheers, ben

Default splutter

First thought for me would be has the phase sensor ever been changed in the dizzy? Or are the connections oily, mucky or lose - saw that happen at RS Nat day - same symptons, quick clean and problem solved.

Must be an expert here eh??

PS Sensors are £20 and well worth changing anyway - the originals have wires which fray and break up.

likewise could be a dirty crank sensor (or failing crank sensor)

these are only £20 odd quid and easy to change.

It's worth buying a complete set of sensors if you haven't already changed them...the car is getting on and it's nice to prevent problems before they rear their ugly heads

It cud also b coolent temp sensor telling the ecu that the engine is cold n over fueling the engine. That wud cause the grey/black smoke.

I would go for the CPS first, or it's connector.
