I have a set of 215/40/17 michilen pilot's, done 50 miles, cost Ł544 for the tyres + Fitting & Balance. Still have knobbles & the the little michilen man on the side of the tread pattern. As new, under half price Ł250

Here they are fitted to my ronnies, just a bit to close to my arches so going to change to 205's

I'm running 205/45/17 on low-suspension. Doesn't touch anything.
215/40/17 felt a bit too low for my country's roads

I also want to fit spacers for rear wheel. Anyone who fitted, what size should I use?

According to the math, 215/40 are less prone to tramlining than 205/40 because the tyre is higher than a 205/40, not lower. (0.4 x 215 = 86 and 0.4 x 205 = 82)

So its low profile that induces tramlining rather than width ?

it's hard to say what the perfect size is without knowing how low the car is and what make of tyres you want.

for instance; 215/40/17 yoko paradas are wider than a 225 toyo proxie. different makes of tyres are different sizes in reality

when i first bought my old saff it had 245/35/17's on the rear and 215/40 on the front...never rubbed at all.

215 is probably the most common all round tyre to use to avoid catching etc..

Ofcourse wider tyres are more sensible to tramlining but low profile tyres are far worse because the sidewalls can't flex anymore.
Imagine having 15" wheels. Standard on Cossie is 205/50 yeah?
Still, they don't tramline (well, at least not as much as low-profile tyres) Now compare them to 17" 205/40. Same width but far more rigid so no flex in the sidewalls of the tyres.

Tbh, I also wasn't aware that there is a significant width difference between different tyrebrands. Must be like shoes.

I can see why you'd take 205/45 but I've heard a lot of ppl with lowered Sierra's get shock clearance issues (ofcourse this also depends on the ET value of the wheel) or arch clearance issues. Also, the circumference of the 205/45 isn't to Sierra specs so your speedo will be off.

That's quite common. You could try a spacer but I understand the tyre is hitting the bottom where the spring sits? Then it's probably no use. Best solution then is indeed coil-overs. Expensive solution though.
