MSD Coilpack conversion
Having owned my Cossie for nearly 8 years I have in that time suffered my fair share of ignition related misfires!
Hopefully this will now be a thing of the past as I have just fitted one of Stu's Coil pack Conversions (driver and loom) on my 1990 2WD.
The quality of the kit is excellent and is easy to fit using the detailed instructions and photos.
I made my own ignition amplifier heatsinks that bolt into the original location on the inner wing and a coilpack mounting that is fitted to the strut brace on the inlet side allowing me to use really short HT leads.
I already had a mondeo coil pack and leads kicking around, I shortened my existing Motorsport HT leads and fitted the coilpack type terminals on
The car started up on the 1st turn of the key and feels a lot smoother whilst driving, I am running 071c plugs gapped to 0.75 mm.
I can thoroughly recommend this conversion to anyone who wants a more up to date and reliable ignition system.

Hi
The complete kit costs around £400 from MSD which is cheaper than buying the parts separately.
I only purchased the driver board £69.99 and the wiring loom £65.00 from MSD ebay shop and next day special delivery was about £5.00.
Everything else I had kicking around except alloy for the heatsinks which was £7.00. So i guess around £150 in total!
I spent a few hours fabricating the heatsinks etc and probably a couple of hours fitting to the car.
Will get car out for some pics and post them on here if it ever stops raining.

What about the fitting ?, is it(board) soldered in or what ?
Sorry to be so nosey, but £400 is a lot when you can go aftermarket ecu for £500!!
I will raid the parts bin(garage) if viable.
thanks

Very nice piccies there, I suppose I could always put in on my L6 then just transfer it over to a L8 when cash allows, so I can have CL as well.
It depends a lot on whether I bother to LPG it as will need two seperate maps then.
What do you find is the main difference ?, I assume I will have to get other stuff leads, coil etc, wiring harness etc.

the main differences are you will be able to run a 1.0mm plug gap, so a fantastic idle, and great spark on boost aswell, better fuel economy, and engine life will be increased a little too. aswell as a better cold start.
leads and wiring harnesses are available you need to run two ign modules two, and fit another mounting bracket.

Hi,
As well as the Coilpack conversion I upgraded to an MSD evolution chip as well whilst the ECU was apart so didnt directly compare it to how it was with the distributor system.
Overall though I can definitely say there is a noticeable difference to the idle, much smoother now, and crisper throttle response. The midrange grunt is better now pulling hard at 3500 instead of 4000 as with my previous chip.
Haven't really nailed it yet but things are looking promising.
