Default Why am I loosing exhaust studs

Looked under my bonnet today and have found some exhaust studs missing where the manifold bolts to the head. Is this a common fault as I've never known this on a car?

Cheers
Dave

to much vibrations? must just be a cosworth thing.. as my standard OHC has no problems like that.. have cracked a couple pipes from heat espansion and such though.

Not so much vibrations as just weight...a turbo, exhaust system and the big heavy standard exhaust manifold all add up to a weight and half. Turbo damper maintenance is a must on a cossie because of this. The likes of PJ motorsport sells rebuild kits for the standard damper or as some one else mentioned, you could go for a aftermarket jobby. The broken studs can be a git to get to as well...normaly easier just to yank the whole engine out and do them on the bench. Dont over tighten the new studs either...they need freedom to expand and contract along with the manifold.

as already said above the weight/ vibrations from the turbo loosens the studs the damper is there to support the weight plus stop the enertia from the turbo spinning up pulling the manifold off the head simply to replace the studs just some are a git to get to plus don't overtighten the studs in the head as it is only ally and can strip the threads

Yerp, I was told it is a common thing too. I know it would depend on how many are missing etc etc... but what kind of power loss are we talking here? I've been putting redoing mine off for a while now....

have a look at the 2 washers either side of the bolt that runs through the spring they should be about 4mm thick iirc but yours may now be a lot thinner.
thinking about it a couple of studs on the rear of my manifold came loose & I have the bailey damper fitted
hows that intercooler work btw?

This was a constant problem on my car using the standard damper, but since fitting a bailey turbo damper this seems to have sorted the problem.

I do have to check the bolts periodically though as they sometimes tend to work loose.

I think I had one or two missing the other day when I took the head off and removed the exhaust manifold!

Trouble with the bailey its doesn’t stop the harmonic vibrations, that why the standard one is sprung. The bailey doesn’t do the job its intended for its just engine bay garnish IMO
