Yes, dodgy guage mine is the same, unless you drive it extremely gently it sucks up air in fuel line and buggers about till it clears, is it worst when going just gone round corners ?

I had a similar problem - the internal feeds to the tank's accumulator were blocked.
If the tank level was above 1/4, then the fuel was fed into the accumulator by flowing over the side walls, but with a low fuel level, this couldn't happen, so, as the feeds were blocked, air was drawn into the pump and onto the fuel rail.
Solution : either keep the fuel level above half a tank, or buy a new fuel tank.
