Some people say it works great wet or dry, can't see it myself.
When manufacturers are faced with the option of an expensive LSD or a simple bit of weld they choose LSD, must be a reason.
Might be worth asking your insurance company if they would be happy to insure it like this first ?

pros - diff will not break - sideways all the time

cons - juddering at low speed, tight turns - sideways all the time

On my track Sapphire Cosworth I have a standard Cossie LSD with a viscous coupling that has been filled at high pressure. This makes it much more of a locker. It acts like a welded diff but could probably be put back to standard by releasing fluid.

Sorry to say I didn't do the work so I don't know how it was done or by who. But it may be worth investigating further.

The diff is fine at speed and the grip is great but tight turning circles mean that the inside wheel judders when you do a u turn or park it.

take diff out

remove rear cover

drain oil

clean gears with degreaser

stuff a rag down the sides of the gears to catch any spatter

cut out 2 rectangular plates of 2mm or so thick steel to fit in the centre of the 4 small gears in the cage

weld the plate and the 4 gears all together from one side of the cage

turn the cage 180 degrees and repeat

clean up

fit rear cover

fill with fresh oil

job done

i would post you a photo, but photobucket is down at the moment. do a search for welded diff

a higher rating of VC is the better option, but not as cheap and you still have weak planet gears

marco polo on here can get it done

fairly easy to remove diff. you need a t50 torx drive for the drive shaft bolts

undo propshaft bolts first, with handbrake firmly on

hardest part will probably be removing the long bolt that goes all the way through the aluminium casing - may be corroded in due to steel/ally

I have a Welded Diff in my E28 BMW 528i, I seriously wouldn't recomend it for everyday use!
Very Noisey, sounds like a LSD thats on it's way out.
Will step out on in the wet even when going in a straight line.
Understeers into corners.
Slow speed driving very juddery.
Forget reserve parking or getting into small spaces.
Unless you're just going drifting or using a little on the road forget it.
