Default wheel wobble still. 4x4 saff

hoping someone can stop me losing my mind!
just rebuilt the car ready for summer.
the norm engine,box,suspention,brakes.
before the build had a wheel wobble between 55 and 70.
on strippingfound the tca was knackered so changed them.
also sent the disks away for checking(hi spec 6pot,335mm)
disks knackered so changed them.
me thinking sorted, but no!
wobble still there between 55,70. seems worse when the brakes are cold.
also the front is fully polybushed(powerflex).
sure i read a thread a while back someone had the same prob.
any ideas people

Yeah I had/have the same problem...

After spending HUNDREDS of pounds chasing the problem, it looks now as if it's the wheels. I replaced, dics, pads, front wheel bearings, bottom ball joints, bushes. And nothing solved it, replaced the tyres too.

The car is fine for about 15 miles and as it warms up the wobble starts at 50 through to 60ish.

2 Ford garages and local independent specialist couldn't find the problem but they all seemed to think it was the wheels and tyres. At 50 if a wobble comes on they all said it was symptomatic of wheel balancing.

Hope this helps!!

cant see it being the wheel balance and wheels are comp mo which
seem a very good casting wheel.
thanks for the info

I had a wheel wobble at 60mph, turned out to be a bulge in front tyre, could of been nasty.

wheels balanced just to make sure.
any other ideas?

Mine wasn't the wheel balancing as such, but I've had them done about 5 times at different places and each time they've been a mile out supposedly, this leads me to believe that wheels are at fault and aren't running true.

They are brand new wheels and fitted with brand new tyres. So either the wheels are cast badly or it's something do with running 17's as my geometry is cock on the car. I honestly think it's the wheels.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone round here with 17's which have a 4 stud fit. The lads I know who have 17's run newer Fords with the 5 stud fit.

I'm inclined to agree with the 2 Ford garages I've taken it to, they can find NOTHING wrong mechanically and it can only logically be the wheels now!

when u say wheel wobble do u mean through the steering wheel?

if so that usually means the front i would say,

have u tried swapping wheels front to rear? any change?

Could still be your discs mate, I had Tar-Ox on my old one and they warped within about 50 miles, I've been told many times the only discs that don't warp on a Saph are the original Motorcraft discs.

I had a similar sounding wobble on my xr4x4. Have u tried the front propshaft uj's? 1 of mine was completely shot, once replaced though everything was sorted! Possibility?

Is the front prop UJ easy to replace? How do you do it? Might not solve mine as I still think it's the wheels but worth a shot too

front prop has brand new uj's.
disks are new 335mm hi spec, cleaned the calipers, they looked good.
as i said the wobble gets better the more i drive.
and yes wobble through the steering wheel as if the wheels are out off balance?
just find it strange the wobble get better the more i drive and use the brakes.but the disks are running true?

Are the discs deffo running true,or your presuming they are cause they are new??????
Hi-Spec aren't renowned for being the best quality products

Had wheel wobble on my old 4x4,but was all the time, not just when cold.
It turned out to be corrosion on the hub and centre of the alloy where it sits on the hub
Cleaned up the hubs/centre of alloys and put a smear of grease on them and it was spot on
The wheels weren't sitting flat on the hubs

but this is the second pair i have had. cleaned the hub faces up on striping
of the car. just wondering if the disk bells are running out.
gonna have to check it all this weekend.
thanks for all the ideas people.
keep them coming if you have any brain waves.
will let you know if i find anything.

Good luck

It wasn't the hub face that caused prob on mine,it was the piece that sits in the middle of the wheel, where the spiggot ring is on aftermarket alloys if that makes sense

the comp mo's are the right size for the hubs,no need for spiggot rings.
Am still sure someone had the same prob and it turned out to be front
cv joints. have put a new shaft in the drivers side when the engine went in.
would the other one be the prob? has done alot of miles if it is the origa
one.
and if it was a warpped disk wouldnt it get worse the more the brakes
was used not better, and only cause a wobble between 55,70? l

You could hear a CV if it was knackered, doubt it's that. Wobbles between the speeds you say are most likely wheel related. Have you taken them for another balance yet?

you'll need new hubs if cleaning them to a shiney shine doesn't help
knock the studs out to make sure and you've got to make sure the surface is cleaner than clean

stick a dial test indicator on the hub and spin it to make sure it's running true
if it's not then new hubs time

sorted the problems out on mine but they ain't cheap or easy to do, i also stripped the threads on the cv joint so i needed a new one of them too
with new bearings as well it worked out to nearly £350 for parts alone

Mine is the same! Over 50 and were wobbling like like an old man after a day on the pop! It started after i put konis all round! Just taken a really fucked tyre of it so im hoping that was the cause and the konis are fine, just coincidence!

Hi all,

I had the same problem a while back. Turned out to be the steering rack, there is a nylon type bush that goes in each end of the rack underneath the boot. Its easy to find as you can cut the cable ties on the rack boot, then grap hold of the end of the track arm (the Drum stick as they call it) and push up and down there should be no movement at all, mine was waggling about like a prick in a shirt sleeve on one end. Fitted a replacement rack and its sorted.

Hope this helps,

Mike

hi all, just a quick one. did you find out which side the vibration is on?
i found out by raising the wheel on one side, start the car,put in gear,
and let the clutch out slowly, bring it up to speed(around 50).
as it turned out, my front hub was the problem, changed the bearings too.
a mate had the same vibration but was not the hub, he changed the
inner and outer C.V. joints but as it turned out it was the shaft itself
HOPE THIS HELPS..[/url]
