if the cam belt has been off recently, then maybe one of the cams is a tooth out.

if not, then either map sensor or coolant temp sensor (or its wiring)(the blue 2 pin sensor at the back of the head on the passenger side just under the water hose)

Coolant Temp Sensor Checking - info courtesy of Simon @ SECS
1) Ensure ignition is OFF.
2) Remove rear of ecu plug cover and insert plug back into ecu.
3) Turn ignition back on (do not start engine)
4) Check resistance between pins 29 and 11. Should be 800 to 5000 ohms (depends on temp). If outside this range, check sensor and/or wiring.

If it has not been change do it now!, the CTS.
The trouble with this diagnostic stuff is it can still be within limits but way out ie sensor showing say a fully cold engine when in fact it is fully warm so you get mega fuel enriched fuelling when you should not have it.
They do go all the time especially if original, up to 21 years old(3dr) so they do well, and only cost a tenner.
There is indeed a diagnostic tool for these, about Ł15 I have one but have never used it as the faults are so obvious it is not needed.
A cam one tooth out will NOT cause overfuelling, is it belching black soot out when cold and trying to foul plugs all the time needing to be constantly revved to clear it ?
It will actually RUN ON THREE if bad/rich enough as fuel is too rich to ignite and fouls the plug anyway, do the CTS easy to do back of head(n/s) under water pipe as said, then I would be inclined to change the plugs as well.
MATT LEWIS 01922 692424 for CTS although available elsewhere too.

Mine had a similar problem, check the wiring to your injectors. Mine was number 4 constantly earthing out on the bulk head where the wiring comes through behind the ECU. Good luck.

cheers for the help guys. i also thought it was a cts prob but it has had a new sensor fitted a while ago. i dnt know if its faulty or not. also the smoke is not black. its a kind of blue white smoke really dense. now i know that blue is usually oil and white is usually water but it stinks of fuel bad as if it is running extremely rich. i also tried a map sensor. any ideas?

cheers

Sorry but I am not going to be rude or anything just pointing out if the belt jumped one tooth all of a sudden you wouild feel a massive power difference.
I am glad other people are helping and I am sure that the questioner appreciates it as well, it matters not a bit who if anyone is correct, just that we all get along and help each other out where possible, you may wel be correct, I just hope one of us is for the sake of the problem to be fixed.

My car has developed a similar problem. When i am cruising down the highway in 5th at 70mph and off boost it seems to develop a bit of a misfire approx 3000RPM. If you drop it down to 4th and give it a squirt the misfire is gone but if you stay in 5th and put your foot down a little it stays until boost develops but then disappears. I have also tried driving around at lower speeds in lower gears with 3000RPM showing and can't say that there is any problem in other gears, it runs fine. If you run for any great distatance it will chuck some dirty brownblackish smoke out behind. After it does this it runs smoother for a while.
