Best bet is just whacking in a 1.7. Make sure it's come out of a similar clocked car. i.e Analogue/Digi.
If bottom end of 1.4 is knocking, not even worth replacing bearings, just bin it.

you saying the engine starts but the central locking wont work???? if so you already have a pats transponder for the car. does the key manually open doors and ignition??? if so its just the remote thats failed, probably battery or maybe the alarm module has died. (alarm is independant from PATS).

take out the door lock barrel, dismantle it and work out the tibbe code then get a new door/ignition key cut. Then look up the remote programming sequence.
regardless of the status of the remote key, you will always be able to lock/unlock manually as long as you have the matching key.

what is this key you have attached to??? is it a plain key or a 2 button remote???
You dont need a remote to lock/unlock the car as long as you have the right key.

erm so what keys do you have and what does what
It looks like a S plate which makes in an early puma with a 2 button infrared alarm system.
You dont need the remote to operate the alarm. Turning the key in door will do just the same. for example if you want to deadlock it, turn key to unlock just before turning to lock and it will dead lock and flash indicators which tells you the alarm is working.
