got same problem, done head gasket and belt. now mil light on with cmp fault. just done son's car and checked timing. you need to wind crank round twice and recheck timing, guarantee cams are out of line. vct cam needs to be under tension then cam will move straight away. put cam in correct place then undo belt and wind crank to top dead centre or on timing pin. belt back on then wind round again. pain but should work. it all down to timing.

The VVT set up is very sensitive, you need to follow the correct proceedure when changing belts and this includes slackening off the inlet cam pully when setting the timing, and do not use the locking tools to hold the cam in place when loosening the pully as 90% of the time this will result in snapping your cam shaft in 2

Sorry to bump this thread back up but i have the same issue with a ford puma i have done a timing belt kit on, pinned it at the crank (nightmare in itself) and locked the cams at the rear.
Put it all back togther and it starts but has lack of power and has the eml light on with a current cam position sensor code stored. I have stripped it down and rechecked and rechecked the timing and it seems spot on, one question i have though is the inlet cam pulley has a good 10 degress movement on it back and fourth, where do you set the preload for the vvt? This is the only thing i think it can be? Any help appreciated, starting to get cold and dark and all on mine own now ![]() ![]() Edit, well after stripping it down aaain and thinking sod it the belts coming off and i am having another bash this time it all looks good, if anyone wants me to put some pics up on how i adjusted the vvt mechanism i will do. Time to go home and thaw out. Cheers, Carl Last edited by mechanicalrepairs; 29-11-2010 at 08:51 PM. |

The Inlet cam has 10degrees of movment in it as this is its range when it adjusts the timing. You do not have to set the timing on the VVT, all you do is lock the crank with the pin, put the flat bar in the ends of the cams then undo the exhaust and inlet cam pullies. Put the belt on, tension it and then tighten the pulleys, the belt and pullies will have settled in the correct position and not give you the EML. If you simply take the belt off and put a new one on without loosening the pulleys the timing will be out and chuck a EML due to the inlet cam timing being incorrect.
