Default Front electric window mechanism.

Came home from work today. Wound up my front drivers electric window. And there was a loud pop and the glass was half way up. I can hear the motor but the glass stays still. I had to pull it up by hand. But it's not secure. Is it the mechanism? Easy to fix/change? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Mk3 (04) estate facelift. Thank you in advance if you can help.

The glass is held by two metal clamps that fix to the runners (or guides) using plastic clips. The cable fits into the clips and is what is used by the motor to wind the glass up and down.

So I'd wager either

- the cable has snapped (so the motor is still working, but not pulling the wire attached to the clamps)

- the wire has pulled out of the plastic clips that hold the clamps (normally you'd hear the motor, along with a scrunchy noise - which is the cable being mangled as it's not under tension anymore)

- or the clamps have broken free off the plastic clips, meaning the motor is still driving the clips, but the clamps aren't attached so no drive to the glass

Cheers. By what you've said there I think the first scenario is more likely. I don't wanna take the door card off till I've got the replacement parts. But guess I'm daft not to really. Seen repair kits sold on eBay for £17ish. Just looks like cables a pulley and various fixings, Hope that's a cheap and lasting fix if I order one.

the mechanism should be easy enough to change, you just need to make sure that you've got loads of little fiddly screwdrivers and torx bits and little pointy picks to get all the little plastic covers off

that's where they all are

just make sure you DON'T break the plastic internal membrane, cut the mastic off all the way around and then seal it back up again

Hi and thanks. Managed a look in my door. And the cable had snapped. Removed the whole mechanism and ordered the cable repair kit. Managed to find a bit of wood to hold up the glass for the time being. Must say the membrane is a pain to remove on one peice. Hope the bits come tomorrow and more importantly it's not a hard job to install. Thanks for your input fellas. Cheers.

Fixed it. Bit fiddley but not a major headache. I just bought the cable replace my kit via eBay. £16. Recon I saved a big garage bill.

Update. Do not use the sliders you get with the kit. Reuse the original ford ones if possible. As I found out today as my glass just dropped thru the door. The holders won't securely clip onto the sliders. They just let go with no real force. Swapped for originals and a nice "click" sound reassures me that this is the last time I'll be removing the door card.
